So my gs500 decided to cut out on me on a motorway. At 70mph. I had a full tank, filled up 20miles previous.
Same sort of surging and dieing as when the bike needs to go into reserve. I pulled the clutch in, to see if it would help, and the rev's dropped to 0.
I managed to get it to the hard shoulder, kicked it into neutral and it started up fine.
This happened again 10 miles later.
I got fed up with it - nothing seemed to cause it, nothing is wrong as far as i know with the bike, and this has only ever happened once before this - not to mention its dangerous losing all power whilst doing 70-80mph in the middle lane - so i got the bike taken home in a van.
After checking on here (yes i used the search function) ive found two possible causes:
>fuel tap not supplying enough fuel
>my magnetic tankbag is blocking any air going into the tank and therefore stopping any fuel from coming out
Im going to take it for a short spin tomorrow - in the ON, RESERVE and PRIME settings, with and without the tankbag... But until then, does anyone have any other ideas what could be wrong?
Thanks
What kind of material is the bottom of the bag? If it's rubber it could block the tank vent.
Only other thing I could think of is a semi- clogged fuel filter.
The bottom of the tank bag is a textured rubber.
Ive been using the tank bag for almost a year, Only had this problem recently..

How can it be the the tank bag then? I've been using mine everyday for about two months and never had this kind of problem.
You said you just filled up right? Had the same thing happen to me on the way home a year or so ago on the way home. Was driving home in rush hour in Nashville. I was in the third lane over getting ready to pass someone when I lost power and was barely able to get to the side of the interstate. I emptied out my gas tank, drained and cleaned the carbs, got fuel system cleaner, replaced fuel hoses with a little thicker fuel line hose. I know I got some bad gas from a small gas station that was in a bad part of town. I found out there was water in the gas. I also hear there seems to be a problem with GS's vacuum for fuel at high revs over extended periods of time. Seems like ever since I have replaced the fuel lines I haven't had the problem since.

When your tank is very full it doesn't take much of an air restriction to stop fuel flow, I'll guarantee you the problem is with air flow restriction to the tank----you just need to figure out what part of the tank bag is causing the restriction. Try riding without the tank bag to prove it.
I'd suspect the tank bag blocking air flow.Air flow through the fuel cap or the vacuum operated petcock would be where I would start after removing the tank bag. Then I'd replace the fuel filter,if your bike has one,and do a carb clean with balance.I have a stick on how to clean the fuel cap vent in the FAQ.Never hurts to clean it and it only costs a little time.
Another possibility is pinched fuel line. If you've had your tank off, you could have pinched a line putting it back on.

I vote with ben... something stuck in the vent cap...
Removed and cleaned the fuel cap, was about to go for another test ride. Then i noticed another problem..
The rear tyre valve resembles a balloon. Look like it could pop at any time.. Great.
On the plus side, ive possibly found one of those honda fuel taps people swap into gs500's, so if i can get the valve replaced cheaply, ill be sorted.. Hopefully? Maybe?
Im getting fed up with how much i keep having to do fix on suzi..

I feel your pain.It seems like constant repair work.Once the bugs are worked out,it's usually all maintenance after that.
