Title: FS: '91 GS500E 22KMI Albany, NY
Post by: cjaama on July 06, 2011, 08:31:38 AM
I bought this bike this Spring. It ran well when I bought it, but since has stopped producing enough compression to ride it (needs valve timing done). Since buying it in March I have had the carbs rebuilt, fork seals replaced, the chain replaced, the rear tire replaced, and the front brake pads replaced (all professionally done by shops). It has a current 2011 NYS inspection sticker and a clean and clear title.
In addition the bike tipped over while loading it onto a trailer and has a crease on the right side of the tank, as well as scraping on the muffler. It is not a beauty queen, but would suit the purposes of someone new to riding. If you know what you're doing, you could easily get it running yourself and have a great bike for fairly cheap.
I'm willing to move a little on the price, but I also don't need to sell it and would like to recoup as much of the $2,000+ I have into it as possible. Unfortunately, I don't have the time or knowledge to do the valves myself.

update: the bike is running now. i don't know why it wasn't a couple days ago, but it is now. however, the compression issue remains.

are you saying the valve has negative clearance resulting in the valve behind constantly held open?

have you tested the piston rings for compression?

For those who were anxiously waiting for this thread to be updated, the bike is still for sale.  I put it away in the Fall of 2011 in a friend's garage and never touched it since.
If anyone is at all interested, I'm open to any offers.  I just posted it on Craigslist, but would prefer not to deal with that crowd.
Best way to reach me is by email, christopherallain AT gmail DOT com , and please mention you saw the ad here, so I don't mix you in with the bottom feeders on Craigslist
I'm sure someone with some mechanical sense (which I lack) could get this thing back on the road.
