Title: Project subsection of the forum?
Post by: xunedeinx on July 11, 2011, 01:33:28 PM
I think there should be a project, or build, secton of the forum, for all those giant build logs that are either extremely useful or interesting.

Found one from dgyver yesterday that I never new existed, because I wasn't searching for it and found it from a link in a random thread.

This would be awesome!!!!

Well, feel free to create a Master entry yourself. Like I do with the Picture Game. then any time someone somewhere creates or updates a build thread, you can Add to your master one  :thumb:

But a project section under general would be so much easier :icon_mrgreen:

Great idea my bike is totally stripped at the powdercoaters and I'd be happy to do a write up bout the strip and re assemble, I'll be painting my tank and tail and front mudgaurd too so ppl can get an idea on what to do I'd they wanted to tackle it.

A build section would make sense. I put one up on a board that I run a few years back... it gets a lot of traffic. More than I thought it would...

Build posts are different than typical Q/A posts, in that you're just showing something off. People may ask questions or just comment on it. Either way, it's a different conversation than "my bike's doing xxx how do I fix it?"

It's also a good place to troll for ideas... and everything interesting's in one place. Right now, here, builds are interspersed with general questions.

At first I thought the open forum was better but as my 'Before & After Projects' thread sink into the abyss with no posts, I'm thinking a section would be better.  I would always go to that section first to see progress on member's bikes, then check out the main forum.  For me, I really enjoy seeing how a build is coming together and how obstacles were overcome with creativity.  Not to mention the entertaining feedback!  A thread like the picture game wouldn't work because it'd be an endless thread of pages all jumbled together with updates.

Exactly, it doesn't work. And putting them as stickies at the top clutters the top line. "Official pictures post" on boards get extremely long and the conversation drifts all over the place.

Projects, by themselves, can take up several pages, depending on the complexity.

Id say the poll is a little one sided

Yup, because its an awesome idea!!!

Cmon, who owns the site so I can beg? Would an e-petition work, or some x-rated bike pictures of my bike in various stages of de-bolting?

I don't understand the mods though processes here. It's not like forums are "valuable real estate" and subforums cost some sum of money to create. It's literally 2 minutes in the admin back-end of whatever forum software you're using, a few permissions for a moderator and bingo, you have a subforum.

If the argument is "we don't have enough members and it'll spread out posts", just try it and see if it works. If it's empty for months on end, remove it. If it gets posts, great. It's not rocket science here. There shouldn't be a need for endless threads devoted to one topic, it's archaic. Otherwise, the current design and layout are actually inhibitive of new membership.

Edit: and while I'm at it, get rid of the old, stale stickies at the top of the forum. Half of page 1 is stickies, most of which have no value.

The site owner is offline; he's traditionally wanted to keep to fewer sections. I rather like the idea of a project section, though. *looks around for any other admins* I don't see anyone. Let's create the section and see if anyone notices.  :icon_mrgreen:

I can't even begin to wrap my head around this thought process. Hell, a similar Kawi Ninja 500 forum has 10 subforums (excluding another 20 regional forums) all of which have several thousand posts.

One of his ideas was to NOT be like other boards; he likes to keep things simple, uncluttered, and uncomplicated. Now take a brief break from complaining and go test the GS500 Projects section.

Everyone, please see if you can post, upload pics, answer posts, etc. PM me if you have problems (or post 'em here).  :icon_mrgreen:

Its not complaining if it's constructive and relevant.

Seriously, all comments, suggestions, complaints--constructive and otherwise--gladly accepted (and sometimes ignored, and sometimes implemented as time permits, and sometimes vetoed). But we do value ALL input!

but i'm just a newbie.....

Sweet! My direct experience with this is that it adds value and is popular. I expect that will be the case here too.

I don't think having this section clutters the board. I actually think it makes it simpler. You should be able to go to a section of interest and read. If I want to buy parts, go to "For Sale." If I want to read/ask tech Q's, go to "General Help." If I want to see others projects, go to "Builds."

I completely agree with the KISS principal on forums. To my mind, if you can't see all the sub-forums on one browser page, you're doing something wrong (or should split the board.) A lot of boards are like that... too complicated. I end up just going to "New Posts" and reading what's going on in one stream. Or they want to be all things to all people... for example, a board that covers every frigging GM car built.

But at the other end, just having one section covering help, general topics, for sale... that doesn't work well either (anybody else remember the old NEWS service? I assume it's still around, but I haven't used it in years.)

I agree and perfectly said. I think it will be a good section, too. I doubt any of the mods/admins thought it was a bad idea; I think everyone's just been busy with life and work and haven't had time to take a few minutes to address the posts regarding a Projects sub-forum and actually create it. My body and bike are both down at the moment, so I might have a little spare time for the next couple of weeks.  :flipoff:  :D

I'm open to all suggestions for what to call the Projects sub-forum. Something brilliant might even earn a custom title....  :icon_twisted:

See, I never even got anyone behind me when I asked for a gear review area. Seriously, at least once a week something comes up about either helmets, saddle bags, jackets, boots , gloves etc. I was told people can find it on the Wiki so I took some time and wrote up a few and found out no one was bothering to look and still asking the same old questions. So, why should I waste my time?

Must be nice to be new on the board and get your ideas taken care of so quickly  :icon_sad:
