I know better than to over-tighten an oil filter cover nut and break the stud, but I did it anyway. I hardly torqued it. Maybe it was weak from vibration/being on tight from previous owners, but I screwed-up anyway! New studs are ordered, and I'll use two nuts to remove the broken half that's sticking out of the crankcase.

well bro you at least got lucky there. and have somethign to grab. whenever i did my oil on my gs collection id either take out my INCH pound wrech. or just tighten evenly. by hand. never broke one. eventually it WILL happen though. fun thing is tightening the derby cover bolts on an hD of any flavor. 9 lb/ft each. and i think 10-12 of them. about the same as a gs oil filter bolt. jus a tad larger
It took ten goddammn days for my new studs to show up. Finally my #1 bike is back on the road! :woohoo:

lol yup. i did a redneck repair for a guy who did this. ( am an mmi grad. ) we had 15 gs' to practice on. anyhoo i digress. he broke 1 bolt. i tightened the others as tight as i could get away with, got him to order replacement studs. 3 of them. anyhoo and used that instant gasket in a tube stuff so he could ride. until his new studs showed up. just had to keep an eye on it
Not having #1 for a week and a half got me more used to my dirt bike. Dirt bike also runs better now as it got some road miles and a new battery. (no more small throttle opening sputtering, idle jet cleaned itself out thanks to MMO) and made me appreciate just how good #1 is for daily riding. I sincerely mean it. The GS fits the bill for me very well. I'll be crossing 30,000 miles in a couple months (bought her with 13,000) and she still runs like she's supposed to. Best $1200 I ever spent! :thumb:
