I have always had a thing for probes...not sure why. But I was just cruising CL in boredom and stumbled across it and actually started to ponder...could be fun?
I have heard great things, good things, and some horror stories about Probes. Just seeing if anyone had any personal experience or knowledge to pass along.
A buddy of mine had one in high school, it was always giving him problems. However, that may have just been a 16 year old with no idea how stuff works trying to take care of a first car.
It's a Mazda... right?
To Wikipedia!
Yup, based on the Mazda G-platform.
Yeah...and I have heard that replacement parts are friggin $$$
Not very surprising, they didn't sell it as the probe for all that many years, and it was fairly poorly reviewed, so there's not going to be a huge support network for it.
about time to replace timing belt
After working on mazdas for 18yrs and doing a lot of work on the k series motors ( 2.5l V6 ) common issues are
Rocker cover gaskets leak oil
Dizzy needs full rebuild igniter fails and rotor button burns out
Air intake tube splits
Oil pressure switch leaks oil
Water pumps leak and thermostats stick
Rear caliper park brake lever seize
Just to name a few things

Has that ten year old keyboard been the one to type out more than 13k+ posts on GStwins? It should be retired lol.
Anyways, who needs to be able to spell nowadays when you have a squiggly red line to do it for you :thumb:
Even though they call it a Probe, don't use it like one. They're too big!

its posted a majority of them. and alot of my online gaming. so its not been treated nicely lol. but cant find another one like it
here is how it should go only if you can get the probe for $200 or less .....I did this, you must beat my story:
Driving home from work one day I see a 1976 pontiac ventura... think pontiac's version of the chevy nova. guy wants $400 so the window sticker says. As I am looking at it in all it's primer-ed glory, he pulls up and yells out $200 and its yours. I pay him $200 and get the current title too. No shaZam!. Liability insurance was $60 for 6 months. So I am in it for $260 big... I drive it to softball games and just do general stupid stuff with it like offroading it and driving it down stairs and shaZam! I do now on a supermoto. 3 months later the wifes car breaks down and she needs a timing belt installed. So 3 weeks her car is out of commission until I can get it fixed.. she is driving the ventura. AND PISSED about it. awesome stuff. She gets her car back and all is right with the world......
Here is the kicker. WWE is in town at the civic center. We take the ventura and park right up FRONT by the door. people are pissed we get out and people are shouting hey you can't park there!!! and I say "OK" and walk in woooo! no shaZam!. come out and I had even left the doors unlocked and the ventura is still there!!! so I get in and drive the shaZam! home. it goes on craigslist the next day and I sold it for $250. Awesome.
Now if you think you can beat that story with the probe purchase then I give permission to buy the probe and chronicle the mission of awesomeness in this thread for us all to enjoy. If you can't beat that story then do not buy the probe because they are craptastique cars of FAIL.

I have a win almost as win-full..
Neighbor down the block had this white grand marquis that been parked in the driveway for years, had moss all over it, w/e, got it for 1,000.
Bought it, fixed it, shined it up, and resold it for 2500 after driving it for 4 months.

bingo it has to be a deal worth dealing otherwise you get taken. Whether it be making cash or having good times. Instead of the probe find an old 70s or 80 model ford truck with an in-line 300 6 cylinder and drive it forever. Parts are super cheap. Get one like this guy did http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=685298 a $200 f150 that he is hand painting and fixing up a little. Once he is done he will have a truck he can drive for 15 years and sell for more than he has in it. You just have to compromise on AC lol
Yea, or any other non k-car or the like.
Cheap trucks with good frames drive trains, small eco cars, and weird un-liked cars with cult followings (Fiero's, anyone? I had one, I LOVED IT, but it is hated by lots)
Panther cars you can get CHEAP, and usually sell for the same, and you can really haul it in them, they're pretty fast, have diy aftermarket, and are fun.
Same with old jeep cherokees, you can find them cheap, and sell them more to the right people. The old 2dr ones are awesome.
