Title: idle rpm at 7k after start and stalls at stop light
Post by: gan1812 on November 19, 2003, 11:32:58 AM
My 2001 GS suddenly seems to have forgotten its idle rpm. At stop lights on first gear it races to 7000-8000 rpm. How can i cure this problem. It also seems to stall when i come to stop at a light. Then when i start it up again it races to 7000 rpm with no throttle input or choke!
Help...........

That's a hell of an idle! Is your cable binding? That seems rather drastic for a carb adjustment, my bet is the cable is binding and not letting the throttle close.

My '96 did this "out of the blue" recently, too.  A standard carb cleaning fixed it.

It must have been running lean because there was some gunk in the jets.  The difference in the amount of light I could see through the jets "before" versus "after" was significant.

PS - That bike has some rust in the bottom of the fuel tank, and I found some rust particles gathered in the left float bowl.  Not sure if the obstruction in the jets was rust, but it was real!
