I test rode a '94 GS500 in 100% stock form. Felt like I was riding a moped. Now I see how much improvement in performance an exhaust and rejetting can really do for the bike. Timing advance and different gearing helps also. It was weird stitting so upright. But with only slight tipover scratches and about 10k miles, $1k for it was a bargain.
Thats why tinkering with GSs is so satisfying...
Did you buy the bike you rode?
It does sound like a very good buy, at 10k miles in ten years (thereabouts) it must have spent a lot of time standing still which would be my only concern, good luck with it and the mods that are obviously underway.
I have bought bikes that sat... for worse than this one...
In 96 I bought a 83 nitehawk with 1700 miles. - sold to a friend in 98 with 7K... and it was and still is perfect... however it seems to eat carb O-rings for every year it sits. He rode it 300 miles in 5 years, and we have replaced them twice already... Its however a keihein carb issue, cos my eli also had these go bad.
In 98 I got a 90 GS with 1700 miles - sold in 2000 with 7K... only replacements on it were fork seals... was perfect in the time I had it.
In 96 I got a 86 savage 650 with 1200 miles - sold with 13K. Needed nothing... but previous guy replaced fork seals.
In 94 I got a 87 virago 535 with 1200 miles - sold with 12K in 96. Was perfect... except for tires that had those side wall cracking... but I still managed to ride them till they were bald.
In 94 bought a 89 GS with 8K... still have it... best buy in terms of smiles per $.
Most bikes I buy have ~8-12K and are 83-91 year.
Sitting isn't too bad. 10K in 10 years isn't bad at all. Unless it was ridden 1000 miles in the first week and left by the ocean for the next 10...
Cool.
Srinath.
I was test riding it for a friend that was looking for a track bike. He doesn't have any experience with a GS but since I do. He has a ZX-9R for the street. A little difference in power. No he did not buy it. He is holding off until after the first of the year. The bike didn't show any signs of sitting around. It would be a great buy for someone.
look into my eyes.... you are getting sleepy....
You want to buy my pile of race bike parts.... You want to buy my pile of race bike parts....
When I snap my fingers you will awaken and buy my pile of race bike parts.
SNAP!!
My friend (Scott) was not too sure about building a bike from parts. He was leaning towards a preped race bike. But I am not sure if he will get a track bike at all.
:dunno:
