Title: Wont start after oil change
Post by: abc192 on July 29, 2011, 01:21:51 PM
Hello everyone

I have just done my first oil change on my 2008 GS500F and everything was going well till I wanted to start her. When I try to start it sounds like its trying to turn over but she wont

any ideas on how to get this fix would be great

thanks

Is the kill switch set to the start position?

I think the bike won't crank if the kill switch is on.

Did you leave your key in the on position while doing the job?  Could have drawn a bit too much off the battery.

If you have a tester, test the voltage on the battery.  Start with the basics first.

Put it in neutral, then try again.  :thumb:

If you filled heavier oil than prescribed, the clutch friction plates tend to stick together, and starter's having a bad time turning the engine over.

Good advice about starting in NEUTRAL; least amount of drag on the clutch and therefore the least amount of stress on the battery and starter by doing it that way.

If the GREEN indicator light isn't on, you're not REALLY in neutral, you're still in gear, so pay close attention to the indicator. Also, be sure the clutch lever switch didn't get disconnected somehow, and make sure the kickstand is all the way up, not dangling.

happen to mine also, wanted to ride this morning even just for 30mns before going to work, then all of a sudden
she doesn't want to start-up.

you could feel and hear the starter cranking but the engine doesn't turn all the way.

i have checked the Kill Switch (which was good), it was on Neutral (with the green neutral light on), checked the Gas switches(reserve, off, and i forgot the other one: the valve was on Reserve Position), but still nothing until i have drained the battery.

i'll try to jump start it once i get home later this afternoon.

But i have a question though, can i use my car to jump start it though? or do i have to purchase a jump starter spicifically for a motorcycle? i really do hope i could just use my car to jump start it...

please help... Thank you

Well... you can always try to push-start it, but the car battery will help too.  :icon_mrgreen:

You can use a car but make sure the car's engine IS NOT RUNNING.The car alternator puts out way more current than the GS electrics can handle and usually fries the rectifier/regulator and can damage the battery.

thank you very much for the help Ben, i really do appreciate it

i bought a gallon of gas, so i could eliminate the "not enough gas in the tank"
then it out from my car (not engine running, KUDOS to BEN2GO) up this morning
and it started up immidiately.  I think i just needed to put more gas on it... he he he

but it was a good riding this morning.

though i know it was a stupid mistake on my side not gassing up right away,
but at least i learned how to jump Exodia from a car

Thank You everybody especially to BEN2GO
