Title: Picked up a new rattle lately
Post by: Grommett2k on August 01, 2011, 03:31:18 PM
Something I have noticed the past few weeks. When I am at low speeds. Does not matter if I am in gear or in neutral; I am getting a rattling sound.

I am mainly hearing it when I am coming to a stop, or rolling thru the traffic circles in my neighborhood. I have put the bike in neutral while coasting and I hear it there also. Sounds like it is coming from right under me. Sound goes away as soon as I give a bit of throttle. I am thinking it is play in my drive chain.

Oil level is good.

I am planning on replacing sprockets and chain in the next month. Anything else I should look at given this new rattle sound?

Yep, sounds like chain slack.  Check your chain slack.  Adjust as necessary.

Seconded. Chain slack is one of those things that I'm surprised people don't check. I mean, it takes two seconds to stick your finger down there and move it up and down a little bit to make sure she's good and tight.  :cookoo:

If you have a pre 2005 GS it could also be cam float end play. Make sure you are running the correct grade oil and it is topped up. If it is this noise it isn't terminal, it is a common GS fault.

Thanks for the replies. It is an 06. I was figuring chain, just wanted to run it by the board to confirm my suspicions. Thanks again.

Been hearing a knocking type sound myself.. but it seems to be coming from the engine-ish area
