Title: Painting Rims with Tires
Post by: Twism86 on August 02, 2011, 01:08:40 PM
Has anyone painted, well more like touched up, their rims while still on the bike with tires?

I had a new rear tire installed and the guy chipped the hell out of the edge of my rim and it looks pretty bad. It needs a touch up but I dont want to remove too much. Any suggesting besides liberal masking?

Tom

i used those 3 x 5 cards to paint the rim with the tire still on it.

just go to those 99 cents store and buy those 3x5 cards

deflate your tires to the point you could slide the 3x5 cards between the lip of the rim and the side of the tire

you know what to do next.

then just tape whatever Part of the tire that's exposed

hope this will help

Deflate the tire until the bead almost comes loose, then stuff index cards or something in the lip the entire way around. Re inflate the tire and tape off the remaining rubber.

Ha! Exodus: you type faster than me.......

Could you use that technique on repainting the entire wheel?  I was thinking of going from white to gold but if it requires me taking the tires off the rim and then stripping and then painting I figure it's too much work to be worth it.

Tom, you're not planning on doing the wheels while on the bike, are you? Because you could drive them down to a gas station and get air there. Or use a bicycle pump (good luck with that one though) or even a small 12v air pump (also not ideal).
