Title: carb issues continued... part 3 1/3 revisited v2.0 rebooted
Post by: motoDMD on August 03, 2011, 05:51:34 PM
So...as the title suggests... still working out some kinks in the 89.

I've fixed the initial problem of the hanging idle.  Goes up quick and comes down to ~1.3-1.5 very quickly with no hang in b/w (swapped out stock jets for 125 main/ 40 pilot)

Built the $5 carb sync tool and after 6 hours of turning the wrong screws, finally turned the right one and got the liquid height to stay even!   :thumb:

Cleaned the fuel cap (according to FAQ) to make sure the venting is all good.  The cap is missing the little ball that keeps the key cover sprung shut but no big deal.

Maybe I just don't remember how the bike ran because I rode it in April last because of all the problems and my timing issues with school, but the bike seems like it is still at about 80% power (compared to like 50% before the sync).  With the sync tool, I couldn't get my hands on one of the adjustable t-valves so I just synced it with a closed system.  Should I cut the tube in b/w on top where the valve would go to make it open?  The FAQ suggests this makes it more sensitive and would this allow an even better sync to give me the full power?

Otherwise, the only issue that stands...FINALLY...is this power thing.  I can put the throttle full out and it seems like the bike is still pushing against a load, better now, but still seemingly not as "jumpy" as I would like it.  I notice that above 40 mph, with the throttle full out it accelerates but more or less slowly rather than just allowing me to keep shifting up and up.

Let me know if there is anything else I can try and/or if the bike should be accelerating rather slowly...

Also, the air/mix screws are 2.5 turns out.

thanks guys

fun fact:  i called a dealership/service shop to get a quote for the fix after I described my problems and they told me to put down a $500 deposit b/c the fix would likely cost 500-1000......

Stock intake and exhaust?

Sounds like either your jetting could be on the lean side or your compression is a little low. Valves to spec and do a compression test?

stock intake and exhaust yep.  the jets are brand new and up from stock as suggested by buddha and the wiki page

i haven't checked the valves or done compression i guess i can try that next.  but the power was fine before I pulled the carbs to clean them the first time.  therefore im unsure as to whether these would fix the issues.

what i mean to say is.  this all started as a hanging idle.  and the rest of the problems followed.  i'm not sure if everything could have gotten out of wack just from me pulling the carbs?

also, is there a way to check whether or not I have the air/fuel mixture screws turned correctly so I'm not running lean?

Sounds like it's time for a valve adjustment.
