Title: Where to get a replacement tank?
Post by: jimigalahad on August 08, 2011, 11:41:41 AM
So my 2001 gs500e's tank is shot.  It's rusting on the inside and the previous owner did a terrible job of trying to seal it.  I'm having a heck of a time trying to find a replacement.  Any tips are much appreciated.  Thanks.

I'd just say post a "Wanted to Buy" thread in the for sale/wanted section and keep an eye on eBay for when one pops up that you want.  Tanks seem to be one of the harder to come by items (at a reasonable price, that is).  Good luck.

How rusted is rusting.. you might be able to get a sealer kit and then JB weld any pit rusting at the bottom of the tank... Would be much cheaper then trying to replace the tank too.

A 97 tank would "work", but 2001+ is the new shape.  The 2001 seat and plastics wouldn't fit up perfectly.  Also the link you posted was to a 87 GSXR.   :dunno_black:

that's what i get for posting with one eye on the forum and the other on autocad

ebay's no help for a cheap solution then. its ethier ~100 for the old '97 tank (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/97-Suzuki-GS500-500-FUEL-GAS-PETRO-TANK-/200637496815?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2eb6ed3def) or 300+ for a new one.

goodluck with the search, i'll try to pay more attention to what i'm posting haha

Not to mention a 97 tank will be 1 to 1.5 gallons less.I put the 01+ tanks on my older bikes.
