Title: How long do you leave the choke on?
Post by: cozy on November 21, 2003, 10:59:52 AM
Ok i know this is stoopid  :dunno: but it's friday and i'm in stoopid mode.      My gs is just about brand new although it's a '98. It's my first bike that has a properly working choke.  :P  How long do you guys leave the choke on after a cold start? Do you give it any gas before starting?
I usually:
Pulse the throttle once quickly, put the choke on, start it, leave the full choke on for @2 mins then gradually ease it down to idle before riding, letting it warm up as much as possible.
thanks to all who reply!!!

The handbook says run at 3k revs for 30 seconds before engaging first gear. On a cold morning I usualy do that but perhaps the 30 becomes twenty. I normally close to about quarter open after that and close after 30-60 seconds riding but I suppose it will depend a lot on conditions, temperature, humidity and your set-up. I have not altered mine since buying new. The unhelpful but real answer is "When it feels right"

If you are jetted correctly all you should need to do is turn the choke full on, crank it and let it run. When the engine starts to race up to 2-3K, slide the choke 1/4 turn or until the rpms go down again.  Do this until it is completely off, usually within a minute or so.

Don't ride with the choke on. It fouls the plugs and adds to carbon buildup.

Almost full choke for 30 to 40 seconds while I put my gloves on, my bike will be taching at 4000rpm, then I adjust the choke so it continues to warm up at 3500rpm and count off another 20-30 seconds, then slowly turn off the choke and utilize the throttle to maintain idle around 1200rpm and ride off. Usually at the next light it's warm enough to idle on it's own at 1200rpm.

Just repeating what everyone here just said.  About 30 seconds on full then drop it down till it idles at about 2k rpm for a couple minutes.  Thats usually enough.

On cold mornings(45 degrees or so) I'll put it at full(3k) for about a min i guess. Then just ride it easy and its ready to rock nd roll after a mile or so. Does that method work best?  :dunno:  Dunno. Eaither that or pour some strong coffee in the tank. Gets me up and movin'.
