Title: Fuel Tank Compatability
Post by: ultranothing on August 13, 2011, 07:05:02 AM
Hey there!  I found this nice looking fuel tank on eBay UK:

But it's for a 2006 GS500, and I've got a 1997.

I did some reading on the forums, and I'm getting some mixed signals as to whether or not the newer style tanks will fit on the older style frames.

From 1989 until 2000, the tank/frame design was the same?  In 2001, they made some changes, and though a newer style tank will fit, there might be an issue with the seat?  I could modify the seat, apparently, unless I don't mind the seat resting on the tank?

That's what I know from my research.  I'd love any input you may have regarding whether or not it's doable, the process involved, etc.

Thanks!

either ben2go or addidas has a writeup on how to do it, you need to swap the tail section and do some other small mods.. but you gain a gallon of fuel.

Yes, that I've heard as well.  An extra gallon of fuel would be a nice bonus.

Strange that I didn't find that post.  I must've searched for variations of the terms at least fifty times since my bike fell over.

Well, perhaps they can chime in with an answer, or the link.  If not, I'll still consider getting the tank  and just winging it, because one thing I did ascertain in all the research is that it's not too hard.

Yeah, we'll see.  I've heard that before.

Hey, thanks for the link!

As far as that tank is concerned?  Pssh, $254 to ship from the United Kingdom?  I don't think so!

Good to know it's doable - it's been tough finding a decent tank so this really widens the search.

So no one wants the tank I have for sale?
