Title: SUPER high idle = running lean?
Post by: elementxero on August 13, 2011, 05:23:45 PM
I just put everything back together after cleaning the carbs and replacing everything (jets, o-rings, valve seat, etc), and the bike starts RIGHT up, but it idles crazy high--like 6k+.  This would indicate that the engine is fuel-starved, correct?

The fuel hose routing in this thing SUCKS ASSHOLES by the way.  I am not ruling out the possibility that I have a kink somewhere.  Also, I installed a fuel filter and I put it in-line right before the carbs.

I have a feeling I'm going to just buy 20ft of 5/16" Tygon tubing and route them nice and clean.

Also, is Home Depot Vinyl Tubing OK for fuel?

Did you sync the carbs after putting them back together?  How about adjusting the idle screw?

If those are ok, then try removing the fuel filter.  Those can f@ck with the fuel mixture and cause a lean condition.

Home depot vinyl tubing can work as as a fuel line, but it becomes stiff and loses it's bendability after only a short time.  I used it for a season, then switched to Tygon.

What was the issue before the carb cleaning? When you installed them, did you start the bike with the throttle cable disconnected? If not, disconnect the throttle cable and check the idle again.Could be a tight throttle cable or choke cable not seated properly.Check for vacuum leaks around the carb intake boots and vacuum ports.Balance/sync should only be done at idle rpm. When was the valves last adjustment?fuel filter will cause fuel starvation,if it isn't flowing enough fuel. That wouldn't cause high idle.

The lowes HD crap turns hard, fuel seems to not affect it even so ... I prefer the ebay seller "fuellineguy" ... Tygon or some such material ... Or try silicone line ... somehting that can stand heat in addition to our modern day chemical mystery soup we call gasoline.
Cool.
