Homepage comes up with a message that says I can change the theme and the color...hot to do this???

You need to get some coloured marker pens and just let your imagination go wild.

click Profile on top navigation bar

then hover over modify profile(near top of profile page)

and select "look and layout"

theme selection is the top line in look and layout

I have tried them all and I like the blue them listed at the bottom.
