Title: Looking for new battery with electrolite
Post by: Pigeonroost on August 24, 2011, 07:10:06 AM
I've looked at Dennis Kirk, Bike Bandit, and Amazon for OE size and confirguration battery for my 2007, but they are shipped without the acid.  Not much good to me without the juice.  The batteries for my other bikes have always been shipped with the acid in seperate container.  Is there such an arrangement for our bike or an alternative prefilled, precharged, sealed battery?  Got a brand, model, source?

Might just have to go to dealer and pay da man, or get chitty battery at WalFart.

Been real happy with my Scorpion sealed battery, going into my 3rd year with it and I'm hard on batteries with my winter riding.  Seems to crank noticeably better than a conventional battery in the cold and priced right, was delivered to me in a few days.

If the USA has become anything like the UK there are now all sorts of rules, regs restrictions etc regarding the handling storage and transport of battery acid and no one will touch the stuff now. The last battery I bought that came with acid was a Varta and I bought it through a Varta agent. Everyone seems to be steering away from wet batteries now and more towards the gel/sealed type that dont carry the hazards wet batteries do. I doubt they will even be available in a few years.

I bought the WalMart ES12BS sealed battery and it's been great so far. I had to do a bit of reworking of one of the terminal cables but otherwise haven't had a single issue with it.

You don't have your location in your profile. If you were near me, you could have one. I'm replacing my batteries (which are less than a year old) with the LiOn ones.
They have them for as low as $99 and last 4 times longer than lead acid.
If you're on a budget, then buy cheap lead acid batteries every year. Or invest in a battery that will last 4 times longer. I got the higher rated one (14a .vs. 11a) for $140. I'll never have to worry about a battery again or have to bother with battery acid and corrosion. No battery tender needed - holds charge for a year.  1/5 the weight.

I felt it worth spending the extra $ one time and never to have to worry about it again. I read too many posts by people with battery problems. See pix in the "What have you done..." thread

The AGM and sealed gel batteries are still lead acid and thus have the disposal problems, but no leakage issues. Better choice than standard but not as good as LiOn types.

Just my 3 cents worth (inflation)

This seems to be shipped with acid (separate bottle included):
http://www.ebay.com/itm/390216370395?ru=http://www.ebay.com:80/sch/i.html%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dp5197.m570.l1313%26_nkw%3D390216370395%26_sacat%3DSee-All-Categories%26_fvi%3D1&_rdc=1#ht_3176wt_829
It's US-based, too.
Not a primary brand, though.

Edit: modified link to ebay.com.

HOLY SMOKES! That is one LONG Fleabay link; I cut it down a bit:

Should be easier on the eyes, and easier to copy / paste...

I run adventure power on my 95---no problems at all.

I'll second the scorpion sealed battery.  Excellent product at an excellent price.  I think mine was 65 with shipping.

Thanks for replies.  I will follow the leads.  Is the LiOn battery similar to the LiFe battery (lithium iron)?

Will google scorpion battery and check out the flea bay.
Will see about updating my displayed info, here in West, by gawd, Virginia

actually is the LiFe. My bad on what I called it.

For $99 you can get a Shorai that is 11ah. Not much more than a sealed battery but with less weight, no disposal problems and 2 to 4 times the life.

I went with the 14ah just to have that extra boost (and I can really tell it is there when starting).I was reading up on the differences, The LiFe can go way down to like 70% discharge while a lead acid can't go even as low as 50% without possible damage. So it seems even the same rating battery would give more/longer starting capability.

I will replace Suzi's and Junior's this weekend with the new batteries. They came in yesterday. Now to dispose of the lead acid batteries. They're less than a year old but I can't find anyone that wants them.

Any chance of a follow-up here? How has the LiFe battery performed so far?

Zero problems.
With 3 bikes, once in a while I do a bad thing and ignore one for a week (  ). No problem holding a charge and starting. Actually, after 10 days it is the bike that need to crank a few times to get fuel and stuff flowing again. Battery doesn't hesitate at all. I'm glad I have them. Pay a little more and never have to worry about the battery. Buy a wally-mart and you'll be making postings about why your battery won't stay charged and cranking problems.

Any chance of a follow-up here? How has the LiFe battery performed so far?

Today I decided to ride Trey. I hadn't started him for over a week, (maybe close to two weeks) since I put on a new tach cable and a mod to cut the headlight when starter button pressed. LiFe battery. Sitting at 50 degrees the past few days. He hasn't had an oil change since I got him and I know the oil is gunky and thick. (I know - I should give him more attention. He was showing he was unhappy and being ignored.)

He was fussy - had to have full choke and cranked him for probably 20 seconds. There was not the slightest bit of slowing in the cranking. Same full power the entire time. I'm used to worrying about doing that from experience with regular batteries. They'd slow down and start to poop out.

This little LiFe guy stayed in there with full power. I'm going to add a small panel mount volt meter. I'm curious as to the voltage and how it holds up under a long load like that.

My next project is to put in a MosFet voltage regulator. They're supposed to be really great and don't blow - they just shut off when too hot or overloaded, then turn back on when cool enough. I'm going to hook up the oscilloscope before and after with the bike running to see the difference in voltage stability. I'll post pictures and a video when I do that.

So the report on LiFe batteries? Well worth the extra money.

Hi all,
It's been a while. :)
Yo, adidasguy, so can you share a link to the LiFe battery your bought?
And Jack, the sealed battery you bought fits just like the original, with the proper polarity and size etc?
Thanks fellows.
Best wishes,
Trwhouse  :)

http://www.batterystuff.com/powersports-batteries/LFX14L2-BS12.html
(In the lower right are links to the ones with lesser amp hours. A 9 would give a little more crank than a stock battery, even though the lead/acid is a 10a battery. That's because the LiFe put out power for a longer time and can be drained more. read the info there on the LiFe batteries. I found it all to be true now that I have been using them for a couple months.

I noticed price dropped a few dollars. This is a 14a battery. They have 9a which would be same as stock battery. LiFe batteries can be drained more than a lead acid battery so even the same amperage battery will give more power and longer cranking time.

I love these little things. I have to say I am not used to a battery cranking a stubborn Trey or Junior for over 30 seconds on a cold day and not slow down in the slightest way. Usually, you can notice a little weakening of the battery after 30 seconds of cranking.

I think the extra money is worth it so you don't have to worry about a battery ever again or needing a battery tender unless you really do drain it with a stubborn bike.
