Title: Suggestions on what to do? Gf's Iphone on Verizon got stolen
Post by: TheGoodGuy on September 04, 2011, 12:31:20 AM
My Gf's Verizon iPhone (2 months old) got stolen today. We tracked it down with mobile me, sent several messages to the unit.

For over 2 hours we sent messages to the phone. We even drove by the area (in a shady area of Van Nuys) and walked around while I was calling the phone. We couldnt hear it ringing (or beeping when you send the alert message)
and finally we ended up wiping the phone remotely and posting a lost iphone flyer in the area.

Fact is we probably wont get the phone back. Damn illegals.

So we went to Verizon, they REFUSED to even talk to us properly about the case. They were like 'you need to buy the phone at full retail'. She didnt have insurance, cause in the past when asurion provided phone insurance they really didnt do much and old non-smart phones didnt cost that much. Verizon wants us to pay 650 for a new phone. Their manager was super rude, wasnt willing to listen. What a way to treat a long time customer.

We want to try and get a new updated contract on the account. The phone is 2 months old, it got stolen. She has been a loyal verizon user for the last 9 years. This is the first time like this happened.

She's lost a lot more than a phone, lots of pictures, contacts, memories etc etc.

Any suggestions. I am looking on CL for a used iphone, but so far most of them are 'bad esn' (aka stolen/lost phones)

Edit: She just told me that the sales guy never explained the insurance other than 'do you want cellphone insurance'. In suffecient training for the sales folks. They should have spent 2 minutes explaining why they may want to consider the insurance and what its difference is between that and apple warrenty. Perhaps they will get more ROI and more 'upselling' points.

idiots!

bad ESN also can mean unpaid bills. wish there was a way you could remotely lock the phone down tighter than ft knox. lol anyhoo, idk whatyou are willing to pay for one of them, BUT, ive seen many on ebay, and other locations. that aside, on to your/her situation. write a letter to corporate
Verizon Corporate Office | Headquarters

explaining your history wiht them and your experience and see what they do about it.

I should have updated this.. so after buying the new phone at BBY and activating it on her Verizon account..

lo behold the guy who stole it calls in to return it for the $100 reward. So we gave the parents teh $100 reward and returned the phone back to BBY and reactivated her old phone.

They couldnt do anything with her phone because it had a bad ESN (we forced them to put one on) and it was wiped.

Anyway story ends happy (so far).. though she did get rear ended on her new car (by a 17 yr old) on her way to the verizon store to do the switcharoo.

I don't know if they have this for Apple but I have Lookout for my Android device. It will locate your device and if the phone is on start screaming (tried it out once wow that sucker is LOUD)  you can also have it where you can either lock or wipe out your data. You can also create a back up on mylookout.com so you have your pics, contacts, etc.

I had a stolen phone once I took the police report to AT&T and they gave me a discounted phone. I've been with them for 8 years and their customer service has been awesome. Lately I've had cash issues and they set it up so I can pay twice a month instead of the huge lump sum. The one lady told me you've been loyal to us we are going to do the same. Yes, I pay a little more a month but if that is the service that Verizon gives I'll be happy to give AT&T more.

Might be an idea I have it and like it. Oh yeah, it scans everything you download not sure if there really are viruses phones can get but hey I like to be safe.

we did have mobile me, thats how we tracked the phone down and thats how we wiped it remotely.

We've written a nasty letter to Verizon CEO and I put in some not so kind words on their lack of sensitivity training and lack of sales & support training.

most of the time android phones are hackproof. well not really. BUT, windows based os' are the ones the losers concetrate on. theres been a few on apples os' ( a modified linux more or less ) but they go where hte market share is. as long as youre not stupid with it youll be fine. course youre not stupid sooo :)
