I tried searching but didn't seem to turn up much on this. What's a normal warm up time? Mine usually takes around 10 minutes, to get entirely off choke, and will stutter during mid or low throttle for another 5 after that. Is this a normal thing? It seems kind of excessive to me, I figured by the time it's off choke it should be good....but I've never owned anything carbureted, so I'm not entirely sure.
I get all geared up then start on full choke. adjust choke to keep rpm about 1.5k and head on down the road. Once under way I go to full off choke and it's good to go in the first 1/2 mile which is when I have to stop at the State Route. It's an '09 with close to 4k miles on it.
Keeping in mind my bike is a work in progress:
I turn on my bike with 3/4-full choke depending on how warm my garage is and leave it on while im gearing up. I usually play with the throttle a bit to find the choke sweet spot and ride a few miles with it on because the bike is notoriously cold blooded and i havent rejet it from stock.
Id estimate between 10 and 15 minutes from start, worse case scenario is 20 min in the freezing mornings during the worst part of winter. Never had it take that long, however.
There are a lot of variables that go into the warm up time. From jetting, ambient air temps, how much the engine is revved until warm, etc. The important one is how clean your carbs are. A dirty pilot jet or fuel enrichment circuit (choke circuit) can affect your warm up time as well.
Full choke for about 30 sec - 1 min, choke off then just ride away. :thumb:
1994 with 35,000kms.
1/2 to 1/4 choke to start, once I turn off my street I cut the choke to zero and I'm good to go.
2004 with valves at .13 exhaust and .05 intake 18600 miles
I full choke mine to start then i put on my gear and kill the choke and I roll out with a good solid idle, Valve seem to have a lot to do with how much choke is needed.

Sounds like you need your valves checked.

Maybe you have a thermostat problem? :icon_mrgreen: :icon_mrgreen: :icon_mrgreen:

x2
Im dont using a choke at all. Maybe sometimes if bike sat a few days with no ride and very low temperature. But even then right after start up i turn it of choke and engine work seems normal
Klaxon, have you re jetted you're carbs for any reason? I ask because my GR650 is the same way. I never have to choke it until I leave work in the morning (graveyard shift).
But my carbs are cleaned & tuned, valves within spec, and it's still fairly warm out -tomorrow usually above 60°
All bone stock. No jets, no aftermarket air filters, just straight exhaust. Carbs synchronized and properly adjusted. Also they never cleaned :icon_lol: Or cleaned long time ago..

+1
A hard to start bike is usually the first sing the valves need to be adjusted cause they are too tight. How many clicks on the bike?
My GS is a K9 with 43,000+ on the clock.
My start up routine is...
1: Put choke on full
2: Start bike and let it freely rev for around 1 minute
3: While revving freely I put luggage on bike, done jacket.
4: Lower choke until around 2k
5: Finish with gear - helmet, gloves
6: Put bike in gear and ride off sedately.
7: After a mile or so I turn off the choke completely
I may not Need to do it this way, but it is the way I do it - even on my fuel injected 919.

you choke your FI bike? :dunno_white:

No, but the rest....
Start bike
Put on gear, attached bags, etc,
It all takes about the same amount of time to do before I sedately ride off.

5-10 minutes here as well, but i know my valves are getting tight. hopefully after my valve check, and rejet she'll be easier to get going in the mornings
No need to choke here.
When I bought it with 11000 Miles, it took too long to warmup, like 10 minutes on freeway!
After going to the mechanic to tune it, didn't need to use choke anymore. Even though that my bike is not 100% well tuned, but that's another story...

x2 for me, this was after a rejet, before it took about 2-3 minutes to not need the choke.
Well, crap, so it looks like I'll have to be checking valves...that will be a project for next season it seems. My bike is jetted according to the wiki for V&H Full, and K&N lunch box, so that should be fine, and the carbs have been cleaned very recently.
