Title: idle air screw between carbs setting
Post by: brandiwine on November 23, 2003, 12:15:59 PM
during the install of my dynojet kit, the idle air screw between the carbs was turned several times in both directions because i was thinking it was the air  mixture screw that had to be drilled out first.  anyway, before i realized my error, i got it messed up.    so now when i start the bike, it idles at around 7000rmp.
can anyone tell me how to know how to get that screw back to stock position.
i'm guessing my problem is either that or i reinstalled the throttle cable too tight down in the carb area.
any suggestions on where to begin on getting the idle to normal would be appreciated.  so here is what i did:

dynojet kit installed
dyno needles with e clip on 2nd position
118 main jets installed
didn't change pilots
drilled slide holes with only the left side plugged
the idle / air mixture screws out 3 turns

plus the screw up with changing the idle air screw - i don't know what position it's in now

any ideas would be appreciated..thanks!

With the bike running turn the screw - if the idle goes up turn it the other way - if it goes down, turn it unitl the idle is around 1200 -1300 rpm on the tach then go for a ride long enough to get the engine nice and warm and re-set the idle.  If the idle does not change as you turn the screw then you need to look for other causes - check and re-set the free play in the throttle cable (start at the adjuster on the grip) and make sure that the idle does not change as you move the bars.

the air mixture screws that were under the brass plugs are at 3 turns.  will turning those back to 2 1/2 lower the idle as well?

i checking the throttle cable after the long screw between the carbs.

i got it all sorted out.  i had to give more slack to the throttle cable at the carb attachment.  then with a little balancing of choke , throttle cable adjustment at the grip, and the idle air screw it finally all came together.  i'm very pleased so far.  i can't wait to take it out for a longer ride to see if the lean situation(high idle when warm) is resolved.
