So recently I Bought a gs500, It came with no muffler and the carb jetted. It's the stock pipe but it's cut off under the foot peg with the remnants of the muffler

I want some sort of muffler and am going to have to weld up a new exhaust. All I've seen for the Bike is the yoshimura TRS and not much else
I'm wondering how it would affect the bike if I put on a muffler for a bigger bike like http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000LQJ5YA/ref=asc_df_B000LQJ5YA1693509?smid=A3TGC5XRRCX4P2&tag=nextagusmp0399908-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395105&creativeASIN=B000LQJ5YA (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000LQJ5YA/ref=asc_df_B000LQJ5YA1693509?smid=A3TGC5XRRCX4P2&tag=nextagusmp0399908-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395105&creativeASIN=B000LQJ5YA)
What are some other options? Ideas?
Im in the same boat you were. I assume after this long, you came up with a resolution. What did you do?

You could always start back with a good stock exh and pipes and then cut and weld or slip on whatever you want
There are plenty of mufflers for the GS500. Any year will work - they all fit the same.
You can get slip-ons or complete systems. Even like new stock mufflers are readily available.
Just search ebay.
Anywhere from $50 plus postage to $450 plus postage.
Drive over to Seattle and I'll give you a stock muffler system for free,

Buy a flux core welder from harbor freight, some mild steel tubing and bends, a used yoshi or whatever you find, and get to it.
In the end, you'll have a unique system, gained experience, and spent about the same money.
a slip-on exhaust for a 98-01 yamaha r6 fits like a dream. i just put a delkevic ss70 on my bike today, if you'd like some step-by step instructions i'd be glad to help you out.
I'm running a 12" universal fit muffler. They cost about $30 bucks, no need to rejet, and I love the sound. Sure the $200 mufflers may sound better (haven't actually heard one in person yet), but you can't beat this for the money IMO

After a quick stop at my local Harley dealer, I now have a $20 exhaust. I cut my exhaust after the "Y" where it was still straight, and bolted on a chrome tapered pipe. The muffler needed some finessing, as the pipe is a tad bigger, but it works very well. My stumble under 4000 is gone and it sounds like a motorcycle again.
A little chrome doesn't look so bad with all the flat, and it's right inline with the swingarm. Highly recommended!
woah I didn't expect to see this thread again. but anyways... I went down to a local bike junkyard to see if I could find maybe an old harley or sportbike muffler for cheap. While there I noticed a stock gs500e exhaust. I took it home for $100 :)
I bought a new Scorpion muffle for a CBR600 on ebay for $119.00
Works great, sounds really nice.

Sick GS. Do you have a thread for it posted up?
The thread is "Trying for a little commuter streetfighter look" in projects.
I must have moved the images from photobucket but I've modified the thread so they're back.
Thanks for the thumbs up.
I agree, Very nice looking GS! (drooling)
