Title: starter problems - help!
Post by: bazza76 on September 06, 2011, 11:37:49 AM
Could someone please help me....

Since i got my 2001 gs500 back from the MOT garage last week ive had starter problems, it was working fine when i picked it up i took it to get some petrol and it wouldnt start, i was able to bump start it straight away and get it back home, but ever since the only way i can get it to start is to bump it.

when i turn the key all the lights come on, the clutch switch is new, there is no connection problems with the kill switch or starter button and the side stand switch still seems to work as when i do bump start it i can kill it by putting the side stand down.

when i press the starter button there is nothing, no clicking from the starter relay or anything.

the bike also starts by shorting the starter relay with a screwdriver.

Any help will be much appreciated, thanks.

The clutch switch may be new, but it's possibly not working or installed incorrectly.

Or -  a dead start relay.

Or - a dead start button, unless "no connection problems" means you actually checked that it works, electrically.

Any other problems are eliminated by the fact that you can short the relay terminals and start, so it's one of those three.

Kill switch, for instance, is fine, or it would not start when the relay was shorted or when you bump started it.

Clutch switch is the most common problem, by far. It could be in backwards, for instance.

Been having this problem at random times. Pretty sure mine is the kill switch.. Try bridging the killswitch wires and hitting the starter... On mine i have to flick the kill switch off and on (sometimes twice) and it will then start up without a problem.. Think it is just getting old.

i dont think its the clutch switch as it was new about 2 months ago and has been working and ive also stuck a paper clip between the two connectors on the clutch switch and still nothing. i thought it was the starter relay but ive just put a new one on today and nothing. the only way i tested the starter button was with a couple of bits of wire attached to a bulb i put one end on the negative terminal and the other end on one wire going into the switch and the bulb lit up, then i put it on the wire coming out of the switch and it only lit up when i pressed the start button? does this mean the starter button is ok?

Sounds like either the solenoid is bad, the battery is bad, the battery is drained or there something increasing resistance in the circuit (corrosion or partially broken/disconnected wires)...
Grab a voltage meter and check the voltage from the yellow and green wire as positive and negative grounded... Look at what the voltage is when you push the starter button. also check continuity over those 2 posts on the solenoid (where the yellow and green wire is and the black and white wire)...

Fastest way to find the problem:
1. Get out the wiring diagram
2. Get your volt meter
3. Start tracing from the start switch.

Could be a bad connector somewhere. Corroded or just pulled lose.
