Title: Is this normal?
Post by: missk8t on September 17, 2011, 03:20:26 AM
Ok... I have no read my manual yet and I have no idea where I've put it actually... but...

when I switch my GS on the oil light stays on, it won't turn off. I've checked the oil and it all seems ok but I just wanted to know is this normal for all GS's?

Did you start up the bike? Oil light is oil pressure.
Engine off = oil light on.
Engine on and Low oil pressure = oil light on
Engine running and oil pressure OK = oil light off

No that comes when you sit in a car park puzzled why your bike won't start and realize that either the kickstand is down or the kill switch is on after 5 mins of trying to get it started.

HOW did you check the oil? Was the bike upright? Did you unscrew the cap, wipe it clean and then just sit it back in the hole without re-screwing it, to get a reading?

Uhmmmmmm..... read the whole thread?

He said he didn't know the bike had to be turned on and running for the oil light to go off.

Problem was solved.

@Addy I read the thread. I knew the problem was solved. My question was relevant to HOW the oil was checked to determine correct level. Cause sometimes people check the oil wrong and the OP said SHE had lost her Owner's Manual. Best to make sure oil is checked correctly from the beginning, yes? Thanks for watching out though to make sure no extraneous trouble shooting was performed on a corrected problem.  :thumb:

@K8, if you need an owner's manual you'll find the one I scanned in on the gstwins wiki at http://wiki.gstwins.com/index.php?n=Maintenance.Books

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the info, I should have stated initially what I was on about. Basically I was unsure whether the oil light being on when the bike was turned off was normal. I'd start Miah and the oil light went off, I had the feeling the oil light being on when the engine wasn't going was normal but it's always best to ask.

Oil checking - My process is stand bike up straight for a minute or so (usually whilst I'm trying to sort my crap out), unscrew cap, wipe, insert cap, rescrew then unscrew and check level.  :thumb: It was all good.

And yup, I'm a chick, I doubt I could classify myself as a "lady" heh! Thanks for the manual too Mister, I'll have to turn the house up and down to find mine.

You do now know you don't screw the cap back in you just sit it on the threads to check the level? Saw that and thought hang on lol better make sure, nothing worse than a siezed engine at the wrong moment.

Not sure at this stage. It would be a lot of fun though getting in and out of that field (when it rains) would be very interesting on Miah.

shouldn't the bike be on the center stand when checking the oil ?  I thought I read that somewhere, maybe the manual or a thread somewhere.

Nope. Both wheels on the ground, level ground.

Though IMO, so long as the ground is level, the center stand should give an acceptable measurement. Absolutely do not check the oil level on the side-stand, though.

From the manual... page 6-10...

The oil level inspection should be performed under the following conditions:

Any time you're up this way, give me a call 0419233025. There's a spare room and space in the garage, I'm sure Belinda won't mind putting her car in the drive to make room for another bike.......will you darling?
