Title: A rich person walks up to you and asks how much for your bike??
Post by: slipperymongoose on September 18, 2011, 10:14:40 PM
How much would you honestly part with your Gs for if you got offered?

As much as it would cost to replace it, as I have it.

Seeing as I'd like a new one (not buying another 2nd hand one), then it'd be the cost of a new one plus the added costs of the added things on the bike.

Not for sale. Not that it's worth a ton. I just don't have that much in it, and it works great. So If I keep it it only costs me gas and insurance. Which isn't much.

$1250 Today.... Will pass MD inspection... 92 with 91 Bodywork....

The VX's can go too...so can the 92 Seca...will probably keep the ZX11

Almost feels like a for sale thread...

First of all, a rich person is not going to offer anyone anything for a GS 500, a rich person, if he is bike inclined, will get one of his aids to go to the dealer and pick up a brand new Busa.

No way.  I would not wish my bike upon anyone else.  He'd sue me.  It has a seriously rashed-up pipe and gravel peppered tank.

I've already had one person offer to buy my bike for his wife, but I had just installed the heated hand-grips.

Oh, I don't know, there are some seriously dopey people out there (and some of them have a Lot of money)...

One guy saw me and Twisted's bikes parked up and we were talking. He came on over and kind of reminisced how they don't make bikes like this any more, how it's good to see these old classics still getting around, etc. I don't think he had a lot of money though.

Ah yes. Logic. Thanks putting that out there ojstinson.

But I would ask the rich person for $19,000 because that is exactly what it would cost me to replace my tired DL1000k6 with a new Super Tenere, and then replace my 07 GS500F that I just sold him with a new 2011 GS500F.

Makes sense, no?

Because you always get those few rich people with more dollars then cents and it also doubles as a loyalty test for you and your Gs.

Loyalty. . .
I would agree auss.
I like the GS500 as a practical all-around commuter rig but I know there are some here that have an emotional bond with their GS.
Not just any GS, but "their" GS.

If a rich person came up to me and ASKED how much for the bike I would say something crazy like 10 grand but really anything over $2000 or a straight trade for a ducati monster it would be a done deal.

It worked... :icon_mrgreen:

I sold mine for $2700, then shelled out an additional $4500 for my new ride, which is crashed and in the garage now

It was a great little bike, but I won't be getting another one (even though I still really like the looks of the bike)...just not enought comfort for me...the only way one will end up in my garage again is if my daughter gets one as her first bike...  :thumb:

Not sure i would sell but reasonably my GS should only go for about $1000. I think i would ask for $1500 so i would have room to come down if needed and some money to put towards another GS.

I bought my GS for $3000 CDN and put on over 10,000kms in the year...then sold it for $2700...so $300 for over 10,000kms of use...not a bad deal...

Yup...but the wifey has said "no spending on the bike until after Xmas..."

So I probably won't even start the teardown until at least during the Xmas break...otherwise I will have trouble staying with her request...and I "get it", pay for the Santa bill first...then I can repair my toy...it just sucks to still have nice weather and not be able to ride...seeing others riding is killing me...

But yes, a rebuild thread will happen...

Good for you madjack  :thumb:, so far to date in parts etc, Ive put about 2 grand into my bike and only just done 3000km. Mind you thats alot of parts n service plus the rebuild and bits n pieces. But what ive sunk doesnt worry me. Bloke from a dealership told me that when you do find the bike you want, within a day the price you paid doesnt worry you or what you spend on it.

To answer your question there is only so much you can ask for a used GS500, but I would size-up how rich and how much in a hurry the guy was and adjust my price accordingly.  For instance, my bike is worth about $1,200 in today's market to an informed and willing buyer who's doing his homework.  So if he seems like Daddy Warbucks and he wants it right now I'm asking for $2,000 and I wouldn't go more than a few hundred under, otherwise why bother selling the bike?  It might break the sale but so be it.  The richer I think he was and the bigger hurry he's in the more I'm going to stick to my asking price, praising how good the bike has been to me.  That's no lie.

$1700 in the present state (needs some gaskets replaced), $2,000 after she is oil leak-free.  That's for a '98.  I've owned four different bikes now, and know that the GS500 is a decent bike at a great price, but not the perfect bike for me.

Been thinking about this for a while because I've had a few peeps ask me now on both my bikes how much I would be willing to sell it for. All I could do was say that it was not for sale with a smile. BUT

I would likely sell it for the price of a (new or good condition GS) + (the labor time I put into building it in hrs  x ~$90/hr) + (price for all the parts I would need to buy again to rebuild another) + (the price for my labor to build another)

= a shetload of money

or I would trade for either one of these.. :D

$3000 firm how it stands today.

After I'm finished with it, I'll never sell it.

Im determined to shove some weird ass motor in it, it'll be one of a kind. Once thats done, bandit rear wheel swap and gsxr forks.

tbh i wouldnt screw someone on the price. or go over new. i have a conscience. BUT that beign said, if someone were to offer me say 3k for my 97 i had, i wouldnt turn it down. i bought my second 97 in 2008? for 600 ( like my first one) repaired it. put a gixxer wedge can on it. sold it for 1000, well 800 and an 86 chevrolet c10 pickup. 2 mos later. truck is totalled i got 1600 from insurance ( theirs) guy is hardup for money, i offered 250 for it the 97. , he accepts. i walk over ride it home. sold it 6 mos later. this was with teh 14t mod.
