The general consensus on this board is it is cheaper to get a good used engine than to rebuild a broken one.

good point Baltimore, however finding one is difficult especially for an 07, Older units are available however you need to mess with the tach issue and other electrical, making the bike less original. I am one for making everything as it should be, thats why I was asking around general costs of a complete rebuild assuming worst case scenario

werase643 said it right, although some of those prices may shock you into rethinking what you want to do.  I say rebuild it yourself and buy what you have to buy new, new and the rest find used and cheap, my .02

cost me around 500ish in parts when i did mine in australia, could of got em cheaper ordering from bike bandit
got all new main bearings and rod bearings and thrust bearings, new rings, new head and cylinder gaskets, new sump, clutch cover and stator housing gaskets, new gudgen pins, (didnt notice the crank seal near the ignition pick up or the one for the gear shift rod or i would of changed those seals to.
cant order the bits though until you rip it all apart as you need check the bearing sizes you need using marks on the case, balance shaft and crank, however id take the crank to a machining shop to get em to check if it needs machinging or just a polish and to double check the diameter of the crank, as one of mine was actualy a bit off what the number on the crank said that ment i needed a different coloured bearing to what the engine was telling me.
however mine was just done because it picked up on a rod main bearing, depending on what damage is done you made need other things (eg if you left a bearing knock for to long and have scratched up the crank it might need machining or replacing, or if you have had a piston fail and stuff up your bore, these things will add significant cost to a rebuilt)
also if you do rebuild make sure you follow the manual as in a bit of a hurry i wasnt realy looking at all the steps (im a car mechanic so was pretty confident) got to the end and had 2 small parts left over, had to split the case again to put the cam chain guide damperners in. if i followed the manual the step was right there in front of me
label everything including nuts and bolts when you take it off, makes putting it together heaps easyer
also probley a good idea to replace the timing chain while your at it, mine was within spec and i needed the bike up and running so left it.
i also didnt touch the head after i took it off, if yours is blowing smoke or even just done a fair few k's its probley best do to valve stems and such to that also adds to the cost
