Title: Questions about the mid-main jet
Post by: Dr.McNinja on September 20, 2011, 01:43:12 AM
I'm pretty confused at this point. As I read the rejetting tutorial preparing myself to rejet my bike here in the next couple months I'm getting stuck on the mid-main (mid) jet on the 2006 GS500F carbs. Since the poor man's tutorial is written using the older style carbs there is no mid jet present. Much to my dismay the forum search function yielded basically zilch as far as helping me find it's location.

First, I understand it's purpose is to smooth the transition to the main jet. From the diagrams in the Hayne's manual I can see clearly the locations of both main and pilot jets, however the "mid" jet isn't listed anywhere or shown in any of the pictures. I plan on replacing the mid jet instead of shimming the needle, but I can't do that if I don't know what to unscrew.

Can anyone supply me with a diagram showing the mid jet  location or pictures of the actual carb showing the mid jet? These would be very helpful and answer pretty much the last question I have before I feel prepared enough to tackle installation of a new exhaust/air filter/rejet.

I've never heard of it on a GS carb. Are you sure it's not the needle jet? Not to be confused with the jet needle......

Hence my confusion. http://wiki.gstwins.com/index.php?n=Upgrades.Rejetting (http://wiki.gstwins.com/index.php?n=Upgrades.Rejetting). Here is the link that has it listed as a "mid-main". I understand using a "mid" jet and shimming the needle perform the same thing. I'd imagine the needle jet is exactly that. The needle jet is between the main and pilot correct? I'd imagine it's no more difficult than the others to install if that's the case.

Mid main - its no myth ...
If you're doing K&N and pipe, you may need it, you can cover the range usually by lifting the needle.  But this is a good option to use as a backup.

One more note of caution, pay attention to what you're doing, you can screw the main in place of the mid. That will result in lots of grief ...
Pay attention, remove a 60 and put in a 65 - or remove a 130 and put in 132.5 or 147.5.
And for good measure, pay attention to pilots too. Remove 17.5 and put in 20.

Cool.

Last question:

On the wiki it says "People" as a measurement when you're talking about rejetting. I don't understand it. From the looks of it a performance exhaust + K&N LB is 20/65/145, put the carbs back in, and go. What is the "people" measurement all about?
