Title: Next Bike...Need Opinions
Post by: omio on September 28, 2011, 12:10:29 PM
I have been waivering on the decision to get a second bike to supplement the GS.  (currently '01)  I plan to take the GS off the road this winter for suspension upgrades and body modifications along with general maintence for a 10 year old bike.  I still ride in the colder months so I don't want to stop riding while I build.  Plus I want something new for more spirited riding.

My current choices are (listed in my preference):

- 1998 GSX-R600 - Has just over 10K and is 95% stock

-1992 Yamha FZR600 - Has just over 9K and is 100% stock

- 2002 GSX-R600 - Has 15K and is quite modified and has cracked fairing from a drop in the garage

-1993 CBR 600 F2 - Most mileage at 31K, but has been unmolested

All are within in $200 of each other with the highest one being $2000.  What are your opinions?

Thanks

The newest bike will be the easiest to find replacement parts for. The 2nd generation GSXR600 had a reputation for poor midrange. The FZR is a neat bike, but 18" rear wheel restricts tire choice a bit. The F2 and the FZR both have a lot of vibration in the city, but smooth out around 120km/h (75mph).

I would rank them as follows:

1. 2002 GSXR600
2. 1992 FZR600
3. 1993 CBR600F2
4. 1998 GSXR600

I advise staying away from heavily modified bikes, especially if they've been abused at all. Most modders do this stuff themselves in the garage, and a lot of them do a shitty job of it, resulting in huge headaches down the line.

Unless you're really set on a spot bike, I'd suggest saving up a little cash to buy a good condition previous gen FZ6 or FZ1. Both are based on fairly modern R6 parts, with good ergos. Lots of good bikes out there though.

The SV650 is a nice cheap bike but I would say avoid the 2003 model year if possible.  It looks like an '04-up but it is a bastard year bike that has a lot of parts that are different and only used that first year of the redesign.  And the first gen models were nice bikes too and are even cheaper.  Plus they have that cool looking tubular frame    :thumb:

I have looked at the SV650, but prices are out of my range, $3500+.  I am leaning toward the FZR, but still looking for opinions and other possible choices.

Guess it depends on what "quite modified" means.

Internal Engine modifications, this one is almost off my list, but it is the only one left that is FI.

Oh, you mean it is a "shot-rod"... Pass

Yamaha sold the FZR600 basically unchanged for almost a decade. The 2nd gen GSXR only lasted a few years. FIzzer parts and goodies will be cheap and plentiful.

the order you listed is...probably the order i'd buy them at....also they all sound like pretty good deals, i'd probably get the 1998 gsxr...or hold out for something you really really want later on...i got my 2000 zx6r for 2000 and it's ....95 percent stock too...haha i think, has yosh exhaust and flust mount turn signals up front, i've yet to remove tank to see if it's got different air filter....wondering bout carbs if they've been jetted but doubt it, stock gearing too....has under 15,000 miles .........plus you'll still be with suzuki  :thumb:

Thanks for all of the replies...

Just found another bike that has peaked my interest.

1990 FZR 1000 with 18K on the odo and still completely stock.  The price is just under the other bikes listed at the top, any information on this bike would be helpful.

Thanks

Kinda heavy. About as fast as a current model 600.

After a few weeks of searching I have settled on a 1993 Kawasaki Ninja ZX6e, went and got the title this afternoon, looking forward to riding it home on Wednesday.  Thanks to everyone for their input.

What's really odd about those bikes is they often go for almost the same price as the ZZR600 that superseded it in Kawasaki's supersport lineup, although Kawi continued to sell both of them at various times.

How's it running?  What are your impressions now?  I'd like to see your follow up in a couple of months here as to what you think of it then too.
