Title: switching to pirelli, piecemeal?
Post by: Phil B on September 28, 2011, 07:21:11 PM
FYI: Im currently on stock, orignal tires, after 7000 miles. Lots of tread of course. But the small detail that they are *6 years old* :-/
(I think they were stored immaculately. no cracking, no other "bad" signs. they're just... old)

I've ordered a new set of pirelli sport demons. Odd thing is, they're coming from separate places, so the FRONT tire is gonna be here friday, but the back tire, next week.

I'm planning to do some fun riding this weekend. Is it wise to replace JUST the front tire, for the weekend? or wait until I have both brand new, and drive extra cautiously this weekend?

I'm not really qualified to answer this but I can answer the other question on everyone's mind:

I think you would be fine. But for convenience purposes, since you still have tread on the front, I'd prolly wait and do them both at the same time.

Intersting.  I would have expected more nervous postings about, "Oooo, old tires are BADDD, you should get off those as soon as possible"

Do Manufacturers overstate the danger then, if they havent been subjected to heat extremes?

(Bike has been garaged in the los angeles area since original buyer, I'm thinking. So while it may have had some heat in storage it has at least not had any COLD extremes.)

Rubber gets hard with just age also, no heat cycles required. I bought a Tire Durometer, to take some of the guesswork out of the equation  :thumb:
