Yes it is true. You cannot use the term master/slave in reference to hard drives and other equipment because it is offensive. At least not in LA
How absurd! When will the madness stop!?
If I have offended anyone, my apollogies. I did not mean to.
If my use of the word 'absurd' is offensive, my apollogies. I did not intend it to be offensive...
but you are encouraged to use it in reference to sexual partners.
Quote from: pantablobut you are encouraged to use it in reference to sexual partners.
Not true. Only in the case of homosexual partners can use freely use the term.
I appologize if the term "homosexual" offended anyone. I should have used alternative lifestyle.
A co-worker's previous employer used stick figures in internal memos: you know the standard Microsoft clip-art stick-people that come bundled with Powerpoint, etc. One of his coworkers complained that "all the stick people are black", and asked what that was supposed to imply. The company quit using the stick-people in memos.
...um, maybe black stick-people implied that ink is normally black and paper is white, and that you can't draw a white stick-person on a piece of white paper? Hello?
Another funny one, is a coworker of mine at a previous job drafted a proposal for some PC and network cabling. His draft was edited by a person with a politically-correct outlook, who removed all references to "male" and "female".
This reminds me of the time that I had to ask a co-worker for a serial cable gender-bender... but the co-worker had just returned to the job after taking a year off for a sex-change operation and related counseling. I tried to think of another way to ask for it ("do you have a male-to-female adapter...?"), but gave up. I couldn't think of any politically correct way to ask, so I just asked for a gender-bender, and we both laughed about it.
WOW.
So, if they can't use the master/slave reference in computing, I think the County of LA should provide a proper alternative. I hate to think of all the hard drives I've offended...
yeeeeahhh what about that.... :dunno:
Our ability to use the english language is taking a beating. One, we have the federal government enacting legislation to limit first ammendment rights, i guess i don't have to mention which act in particular. :bs: Then you have ultra liberal people who want to legally rename all things taboo in hopes that we'll slip up so they can sue us. :bs: When they kick in your front door, how you gonna go? :guns:

My brother-in-law plays pool using the eight ball to knock around all the other balls. (can I say, 'balls'?)

Not to mention every vehicle with a manual clutch. (Did I offend anyone with the use of the word "manual"...perhaps "non-automatic"??)
and there isnt a white kid on the card?, or th.....(id better be quiet.) :x :x :x , 1 question, what ever happened to freedom of speech/expression?im sorry if i offend anyone, but, in my opinion, the most discriminated against group in this country is the white male. i give up it is not gonna change anytime soon
black, white, male, female, ghey straight, master, slave, Sub, Dom, in out, up down, his hers man, woman, give me a break,
folks, get it straight. only problem with any of these terms is the fact some people are insecure with themselves and cant cope with who/what they are or the choices they make or have made. and frankly any of the socalled PC chosen words can be just as derogatory if chossen to be used thatway, GET OVER IT! GET COMFORTABLE WITH WHO YOU ARE, dont worry about changing the world, if your happy with yourself you dont need to change the world, how they say/see things. stop hiding behind the petty use of words to compensate for your lack of self content, someone cant accept you as you? (#$@%) em, let em be mentaly immature. its only gonna hurt them in the long run. nothing turns my gut more then someone bitching about how they are unhappy with thier lives cuz of thier skin color, their gender, they like ladies clothing, they are a man in a womans body or vice versa, they this or they that and cant handle the fact that somone else doesnt like them for it. i say this to them BITE ME! now, someone plz, tell me how my use of the word Buddha Loves You is sluring wemen or dogs, or dogs thinking they are wemen with furcoats ect ect,
sigh thankyou, i needed that
And how is it when the term 'black balled' (rejected) is banned but the term 'white elephant' (meaning something nobody wants) is still widely used here in the UK.
Both tems are derogatory but only the black reference is considered offensive?!?
Another thing my kids have pulled me up on:
Me: "What was that written on the blackboard at school?"
Daughter: "That's not a blackboard, it's a chalkboard!"
Me: "Oh, ok. Then what do you call that one over there that you write on with markers?"
Daughter: "That's a whiteboard"
WHAT THE F**K???
Yamahonkawasuki is right, the only ethinc minority left is the white hetrosexual male.
This kind of stuff just pisses me off. :x
What kind of society are we becoming? I'll tell you. Society is becoming one big bunch of painty-waists who are scared of everything, and you cant offend anyone for any reason, because we have to be one big happy group where no-one is shunned or pushed away regardless of who they are or what they stand for.
Well this crap OFFENDS ME! :x
:guns: :o
This is the reason our whole friggin society is going to crap. Becuase nobody has any morals. Nobody has any balls to call someone out for making bad choices - or they will get fired or worse.
Freedom of speech my a**. See - I even have to censor myself!
Eat sh*t and die! :guns:
Oh, and yes. I am part of the most discriminated against group of people. The white male. :?
Anyone see the movie "Barbershop"?? Not great, but some very funny moments. It was NOT very popular with the so called PC Black community because it poked fun and humor at a few hot-button issues.
Case in point: In one scene, an older, no-BS guy from the neighborhood who hangs out at the Barbershop says something like, "I'm gonna tell you all 3 things that are true that will bust your PC bubbles." Then he says:
"1. OJ did it. 2. Rodney King deserved what he got, he was a drunk-driving bum, and 3. Rosa Parks didn't do anything but sit her tired butt down."
The movie was quite a poke at poitical-correctness, and was very controversial because it did not fall in line with the standard Black rhetoric.
OMG??? You mean that all people of a particular race don't necessarily think alike, and actually can have individual, original thoughts??? What a concept!!
Too much.
:dunno: :dunno:
You know in the Air FOrce a few years back they quit calling it a "cockpit", it is now a "crew cabin" :dunno:
In Air Force magazine I remember a comic in the back that went over the abbreviations for the co-pilot, but the only one I can remember is Y.O.T. (You Over There(!)).

Just don't change the term petcock because it always makes me grin.
The latest "crazy" we have is some plonker of a lawyer saying that nativity scenes on Christmas Cards in offices could offend non-christian workers! Now as it goes I am not a Christian but it's supposedly a Christian country and the first few letters of Christmas do give you a bit of a clue as to the origin of the festival. I hope I don't offend anyone by not being offended, nor was I offended by the recent Hindu festival of lights (Dirvali??) In fact I rather enjoyed all the fireworks. Should I try harder to be offended? I suppose the best approach is that of the Bhuddist who say celebrate everyone else's festivals as well so you don't give offence, sounds like a winner to me.
For the record, PAGAN.
As far as the nativity scene for Christmas offending non-Christians, all I have to say is to give me all of your money. Every red cent. On every piece of US currency, it says "In God We Trust". Obviously these people could not possible possess such a piece of harassing currency. Best go ahead and give it to me as I am much more tolerant of such things.
You couldn't use "manual" either. The 'man-' part at the beginning is obviously offensive to women/ladies/girls/females/non-men...whatever the hell they want to be called this week.

It offends me that you are willing to accomodate.
It offends me that it offends you that someone bends for peace
Blessed Be Cal :thumb: May the goddess and her consort bless and guide you and yours into eternal happiness
Do you get the feeling this could just go on and on getting sillier and sillier but would never get as silly as the PC bods who keep coming up with all this crap.
Incidently, this "In God we trust" thing. Is there enough room on your smallest coin to put... In God we trust, or Gods, or no Gods if you are Athiest or agnostic providing no-one else minds?.....I guess not.
Keep on Keepin' on (Dylan) and never let the Bastards get the better of you. (Me)
