Title: CAGER or CAGE
Post by: tkm433 on November 25, 2003, 12:39:33 PM
Why do so many on this site use the term "cager" or the like to refer to a car or truck?

I know what the term "cager" means and I understand why one might refer to a car as a "cage" but why not just type the word "car" since it is only three letters and I am sure all on this site know what the word "car" means.

I just wonder how many on this site own or dive a "car" or "truck" on a regular basis and still refer to them as a "cager" or "cage"?

I can picture the conversation between two people on this site"

Q:"Hey it is raining out side today and can I use your "cage" to go to work?"

A:" Sure, the keys to the "cage" are on the kitchen counter.  Do not forget to put gas in the "cage" before you come home"

I think all on this site will understand if you just type the word "car" and save us from the term "cager".

I personally would like to see the term "ass-hole in the IROC" or "cotton-top in the Caddy" or maybe "cell phone using @?!@* just cut me off" and not the term "cager" anymore.  Yes, it will take more key strokes to paint the picture or a "car" or as some like to say "cager" but the picture will be more clear to all on this site and maybe you will brush up on the use of your english writing skills and make your high school english teacher happy to see that see might of made a difference in one persons life.

:?

Yesterday I was out on my bike, and this stupid cage pulled right out in front of me!!!  :x

This morning, my girlfriend asked to borrow my car, so I gave her the keys.

Ummm... as you can see I don't say cage all the time.  I doubt most riders do, it just depends on the context they're using it in.  I don't believe that saying cage has hurt my english grades either  :) .

This is a great chance for me to use the word "vernacular"!

The use of "cage" and "cager" are indigenous (double word score) slang words of the motorcyclists' vernacular (triple word score).

I would also enjoy the more colorful, accurate descriptions of offending vehicles and their occupants.

Wow, Scratch wins!

Having just gotten my car back on the road after several glorious months of riding, I can attest to the fact that it does, in fact, feel like being caged now.   :(

The cages are trying to kill me when I'm on my bike.

The other drivers are just idiots in cars when I'm in my GTI. (Although sometimes I think they know I ride a bike and are trying to kill me in my car too.)

It's a matter of situation. We disassociate ourselves from cars when we talk about riding. They are a much greater threat to us in that situation.

Also, cage refers to a much wider wange of vehicles than car. Everything from a Geo Metro to an 18 wheeler is a cage.

By the way, don't take it hard that there is resistance to your idea, like the antidisestablishmentarianists, we seek to maintain that which is comfortable to us.  :nana:

The little kid was throwing a fit in the store so his mom took him outside, locked him in the cage, then went back to shopping

While walking through the wrong neighborhood one night, young Timmy was accosted by a gang of thugs who tossed him into a cage and proceeded to beat him with broom handles!  :o  Bring out the gimp!

If you think your car is a 'cage', then next time buy a proper car... not some bloated soccer mom SUV ;) I think doing drifts on gravel or snow in my Subaru are just about as liberating as being on the bike :)

"cage" evokes how a motorcyclist feels while _inside_ a car ( restrained, isolated from the surroundings)...

yet the term is mostly used by motorcyclists when we're _not_ in a car:  if we're driving a car, we usually call it a car, but if we're riding, we call them cages.

So the common context is contradictory to the evocative meaning :) .

If we wanted to be consistent, we'd use a term which describes large, heavy objects moving randomly across our paths...  something like "flying pigs" or "rocket-propelled anvils".

and how do you pronounce this word. im having a headace trying that word. oh, and cars are also called cagers when most motorcyclists get pissed off at some dipsht on a cell phone who cut about 10 feet in front of you and your dad going about 40 mph and then slamming on the brakes. oh, sorry that happened to me once. yea sometimes its used as an insult and to others its just a category for everything on the road with more than 3 wheels.

its a shorted slang term for Rollcage, being the feeling of safty inside from those around them, this is my safty cage i dont have to be as considerate or caresful in the use of my judgement while operating my safe cage cuz it would be hard for for others to harm me within my cage.

You pronounce it just like it looks, no tricks here! (grumble, english tricks, grumble). Anti - dis - establish - ment - arian - ists. Derived from the word, Antidisestablismentarianism, I didnt even know what i ment until now! This site is so edumicational.

twisted ass gravel roads are awesome, but i think driving in snow is the best. unfortuately we dont get that much around here :( ive also read some of the hostile attitudes toward vehicles cages and even the occasionally a harley or two., you may have had a bad experience with one, (or more), but probably more than a few of them have had probs with two wheelers also. but from both points of view, i can see it. tis what i like about this country. can say what i want when i want and how i want :thumb: , but riders are at a distinct dis-advantage. (wind errant motorists, rigs etc).  :dunno:

"Moving Couches"

The similarities between the car and the couch at home are interesting.

In a car you sit in comfort, much like a couch.

You can hear the radio much like the sound coming from your TV.

You can watch the scenery go by, much like watching TV.

You can adjust the temperature of your little environment to be more comfortable.

And then you can fall asleep at the wheel, much like you would watching TV...

The mind only needs two of the five senses to be stimulated. Usually, it is sight and sound. And we're off to sleep, because we're subconciously satisfied and feel safe. This is why I don't like cruise control. On either a car or bike. I feel I need to pay attention. And 'cause I don't want to be in an accident.
