Title: Interchanging GS500F and GS500E exhaust system
Post by: peterrehan on October 17, 2011, 03:12:05 PM
I have a 1995 GS500E and found someone local who is selling a used OEM exhaust system for a 2004 GS500F, which I could use on my 1995. The exhaust looks identical to my exhaust, but the part numbers for the 1989 - 2002 models (14301-01DC0-H01) are different than the 2004 and later models (14301-01DF0-E02 or 14301-01DE0-E02; not sure why there are 2 numbers). All exhausts use the same size gasket. I thought the frames and engines were identical from 1989 to present.
Does anyone know what the differences are and whether the GS500F exhaust would fit my 500E (1995)? This could be useful to know for owners of the newer models, because oem prices for 2004 and up models are about double the cost of the older model exhausts. Perhaps the newer ones are all stainless steel? Thanks...Peter

Some people around here will swear blind that all pipes are the same over all years :D :D :D

Fact is they are not......around about 04-05 they got a cat`stuffed up em....(least they did in my part of the world)...which in turn is a pretty good reason for them doubling in price and having a different part no.

Different paint colors, different sticker, etc can change the part numbers.... I don't own a newer GS500F, but I don't see any reason why the exhaust wouldn't work.

The newer can is larger diameter, probably for noise control. Otherwise I don't see any other difference when I compare my older and newer bikes.

Another option is a slip -on. You cut your pipe around the food peg (varies, depending on what you get) to remove just the old can. Then slip the new one on the end and bolt it in place.

I put an 05 gs500e muffler on my 09 gs500f. It works fine but is loud in the higher rpms

I checked the MSN link, and sure enough, it states the 2004 model got a catalytic converter. That would explain the huge price increase. I guess I would have to rejet if I purchased the used 2004 exhaust for my 1995 model.

That is strange. I'm quite sure my bike (U.S. model) does not have a catalytic converter. In the specs below the article they say it has twin 300mm discs in front. Makes you wonder how well they did their homework writing that article.

No cat converter on  mine either(2008 Aus). The exhaust is one whole piece. As I understand it a cat would require a removable part so that it could be serviced/replaced.
