If you're going into a headwind, you can expect difficulty getting the bike above 100. With that said, I'd start by checking the basics... Any excessive drag on the front or rear wheel? Chain condition? How do your plugs look? What are your compression numbers? Any issue with the throttle or cables? Speedo (gauge, linkage, pickup) in good condition? Anything scary happen to the engine recently (low oil?) Any blockage to the intake or exhaust? Air filter clean and fresh?

well it's a 500, it's gonna take a bit of work to hit 100, but it helps to be on a slight hill and tucking in

I see 100+MPH plus GPS confirmed on my track bike on a pretty regular basis... Top speed for the stock GS is >110. 90MPH shouldn't be too difficult, even on a pretty tired old bike.

BTW... What sprockets? extreme mods like -1,+2 can have a pretty big impact on top speed.

I'd recommend doing the basis suspension work at a minimum. R6 shock on the back, springs and fork oil up front. My bike is relatively stock, though I've done some lightening, control, and input modifications over the past year or so.

If you're going to track a GS, for god sake keep an eye on your oil level. :)

What gears are you using to achieve this speed?

4th gear will be doing (should be doing in stock form) 87mph at 9,000rpm.

Test it. Merge onto a highway sticking in 4th and see what results you get. (BTW, bike might struggle if you weigh like 300 pounds.)

hi guys, so i was looking at the tips you guys gave me, and everything looks OK, now one thing i did notice is that the rear sprocket has 40 teeth and the front i didn't count because i didn't wont to take of the cover, so could this make the difference? what are the stock sprocket teeth numbers?

thanks you guys  :thumb:

16T/39T

You will need to remove your front cover and check the front gear.

Just gun it while going downhill, you will get there fast.  I think i hit 105 indicated one time, didnt go any faster than that and it took forever to get there.  The GS isnt a speed demon by any means unless you turbo it....

Fuel starvation?

Seeing as peak power is around 9000-9500 rpm, that is the revs you want to see at your top speed. If you're only pulling say 8000rpm at 90mph, try changing down to 5th and see how it goes. Mine has a 17tooth front sprocket and a large topbox and is definately faster in 5th than 6th (that's how I like it).
But do check you're getting enough fuel flow first, you don't want to be running lean at WOT for long!

I'm having the same trouble!. Feels like fuel starvation as in gets to 90mph quick enough and then all power just falls away. I will let you know what I Find.

the question is...

why bother if you aren't racing?  Bike wasn't really made to operate in that range and I'd rather not break it lol.

Why are your riding that fast in the first place?

Post a photo with shirt off. We'll take a vote as to whether you're lean or fat or just OK or "gee - put your shirt back on" (http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb442/adidasguy/Videos/laugh.gif)
