Title: New to forum/New 04 GS
Post by: narftroz on October 21, 2011, 08:21:06 PM
So I just got this 04 GS500F with just under 5k miles on it for 300 bones! I went to buy a compressor and he had it in his garage and offered it to me for that. So I graciously agreed and came back the next day to pick it up.  So far it needs nothing.  had some poor gas in it and a dry battery so i put in some premium with additives and ran the junk out, and got a new battery.  Oh the left from blinker was kind of loose so i reattached it with some special blinker glue i have (also know as automotive goop)
I have had quite a few bikes but i am really enjoying riding this one.  wish it had some sliders on it. and the front shock bottoms out from my weight when i brake hard.
I also have a rear shock from a low mile 06 R6 that i have heard will fit on this bike? have i read the forums correctly?
Not sure what to do first. Any suggestions?

Yup. Clear and clean notarized title. Got the title and had its emissions tested (required in Arizona) and it passed with flying colors.

great snag, and welcome! the gstwin's wiki page has a boat load of great info from maintenance to mods

definitely upgrade the springs and oil in the front. r6 shock is a direct bolt on, here's wiki's info on r6 rear shocks:

Quote from: GStwin.com WikiYamaha R6 shock
Per a forum post by burning1:
06-09 R6 shocks are known to work. R6S shocks will not. Check the bottom end of the shock to be sure; clevis means it'll work, eye-bolt means it will not work.
To install the shock properly, you're going to need the lower spacer, bolt, and nut from the R6. If you can find a good shock with a linkage, those parts will be included, otherwise you can order them from a yamaha dealer fairly inexpensively.

Wgat a steal!
First, replace the front springs. You'll be glad you did.
Then you may find the rear is OK, or just adjust the rear. With a squishy front, hard to tell what the rear is really doing.

Not sure whats going on with the front springs, but the wiki seems to be out of date. I cannot find most of the springs it references.  The ones i can find are not for the 04-09 bikes.
will the 500e springs fit my bike?
should i get straight rate or progressive?
and what kg/mm should i get? ( I weight 300lbs, yes i know the bike is small for me, but i like it)
