Title: RIP Marco Simoncelli #58
Post by: Twisted on October 23, 2011, 02:18:59 AM
If you are a fan of Moto GP you probably share my sadness to hear that one of the up and coming talents of motorcycle racing just died in a serious crash at the Sepang track in Malaysia. He was a personality on and off the track and always made the races interesting. Thoughts are with everyone involved.  :icon_sad:

Anyone else think he was unconscious or something before the crash? He never let go even though his bike was crushing his leg...

Moto GP riders will sometimes use their knee to save a lowside. And the way Marco rode he would have tried to save it. Looked to me like this is what he tried to do but the front wheel suddenly gripped and speared him into the path of Edwards and Rossi. He was definitely unconscious after he was hit as the force of the accident ripped his helmet off. A very sad freak accident. Number 58 will be missed.

Out of respect I wont post this photo here but I will post a link to a photo of the accident. While it isn't gruesome it is graphic so be warned http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff62/icecreamhands/click.jpg

You can see he didn't really have a chance. The bikes are coming through this bend at around 160kms or 100mph. What really sucks is Rossi is very good friends with Marco and often referred to him as a little brother. It must be devastating for all involved.
By the way Scratch that picture you posted of the #58 bike with the seats empty in the garage is really fitting. I really like this one too that I found while on another forum -

When asked if he was afraid of dying in an accident, Simoncelli apparently responded: "No. You live more for five minutes going fast on a bike like that, than other people do in all of their life."

Very nice story. Thanks for sharing.  :thumb:

I wonder what sort of tribute they will have at Valencia for him? Pole position should definitely be left empty.

he wasnt at the top of my fan list. BUT much sadness at the loss. IMHO if there was room on a jersey or bike. to have his number attached do that for a race. pr have his number on all bikes for a race. riders have their own number on jerseys/ leathers ( spotters would have hell with that one. ) but hte riding on clouds pic was very fitting .

p.s. one thing i DID like about him was that wild hair lol  :woohoo:

Apparently they will be setting up his garage and bikes as if he was racing. At his funeral this was said which I thought was very nice -

"I must confess that in this tangle of emotions, I am having difficulty in finding words", said the bishop of Rimini, Francesco Lambiasi, as he began his sermon. He went on: "The evening before the last race, you said you wanted to win the Grand Prix because everyone would be able to see you better on the podium. It saddens us not to be able to see you now but we find peace and much joy in the hope that you are watching us from the highest podium of all".
