Title: Fiberglass question.
Post by: The Buddha on October 27, 2011, 10:15:22 AM
I am working on plywood panels that have some dimples and well I need to lacquer and seal the edge. So instead of using the wood sealer types I am thinking of putting fiberglass resin, as in just that liquid part - polyvinyl alcohol right, just cos it is likely to get on and thicken etc.

Anyone know ?

Cool.

Just use a clear two part epoxy in that case. You can control the density w/ the amount of catalyst you put in it and it'll seal and look better than anything else will.

If these panels are going to see sunlight then you would not want to use resin and it has no UV ray protection. You may use clear gel-coat and add a filler such as West System. The catalyst will only control the cure time, but be careful because too much MEKP can cause a fire or cracking.

Kidsixteen: Indoor only, but 2 part epoxy - well, wont the quantity I need - like 1 gal be $$$.

Ghostie: I dont want to take it away from being wood. It should look like clear coated wood.
Cool.

Nah, there's cheap stuff and expensive stuff.. the bottom end will work fine for your purposes. just go to a plastics supplier, not a hardware store.

Gel coat is just resin with pigment and additives, ie UV-ray protection. Epoxy will be stronger and you can get pint cans, but you will need two parts. Clear gel-coat maybe a less expensive method compared to epoxy. Look at a boat store.

epoxy will flatten out dimples better than gel coat though...
