Title: need to take off engine cover?
Post by: Phil B on November 01, 2011, 11:10:03 AM
So.. I'm surprised I got *no* further sugestions on my old thread. people gave up reading it? :-}
Perhaps I can get some advice on taking off the left-side engine covers. Which makes me nervous, since I've never done anything like that. But I guess may be I need to look and see if anything looks warped after my crash?
Maybe my actual "2nd gear" has a problem? But I dont know what I should even be looking for.

(re)Summary:

odd vibration at around 30mph, through right footpeg. (not left!)
It's kinda like what idle vibration feels like, except I feel this when I'm going at around 4-5000rpm, on top of the regular vibes. Strongest @2nd gear, 30mph. But also present in 3rd. just... "different". not as strong? I dont feel it in 4th.
When I go faster, I think the vibe speed increases and then just blends in with regular engine vibration.

Oil levels: fixed
chain:  re-adjusted.
Vibes are still there.

Pull clutch: vibe goes away :(

You say you've adjusted the chain, but what sort of condition is it in? Are there tight spots? Are any links binding? How old is it?

I don't know all your details, but I don't think what you're describing is due to anything inside the engine.

What you're describing is a vibration that's only occuring in certain RPM ranges and at certain speeds. A bent engine shaft will exhibit vibration levels that get exponentially worse at RPMs are increased.

I'd check your engine and exhaust mounts for damage, and frame rails for straight.

no clue on the vibs, but i pulled the clutch side engine cover off my parts bike with no problems. that's the side that has magnets, so you might have to give it a good tug away from the bike to get the magnets apart.

And, the bolts holding both foot pegs are tight?
