Title: Help disassembling front forks.
Post by: OrTahor on November 01, 2011, 02:43:42 PM
Hello all. Im renovating a 94 GS500e. It is in pretty good condition besides too thin brake discs, leaky front forks, worn tires and some fuel leak coming from a damaged hose.
I started dismantling the bike. Fuel tank is off, front caliper is off, wheel is off.
I forgot to slacken the damper rod bolt on the bottom of the right fork before releasing it from the triples. After sliding it down from the triples, I slowly released the top bolt till it was free. Got the spring, seat, spacer, disc and top bolt/adjuster. I need to replace the oil seal/washer and need to separate the slider from the tube.
As suggested in the Haynes manual, I clamped the caliper mounting holes on the vise, had a friend compress the fork and then opened the bottom damper rod bolt. It took some force but started to turn eventually, however it does not release all the way.

Frustrated Ive pried the dust seal and clip ring out. Then with a friend I tried to pull the tube out of the slider but it is a no go...
No matter what I do I cant seem to apply enough force to release to bottom damper rod bolt.
Now I am left with a half dismantled right fork.
Can anyone give some advice on how to solve this?
Sorry for the bad English.

Did you watch the video in this thread?  http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=58187.0

Are you using a tool to hold the damper rod still while you remove the bolt in the bottom of the fork?

The video was very enlightening, thank you BaltimoreGS! I actually read about this tool, but figured I was smarter than the rest. apparently, Im not ;)

maxwatt, thank you for your input. Although it does look a bit scary, if I cant find/make that tool tomorrow, ill try your vise method.

Here's the tool in the photo next to a fork.
Home Depot parts. About $10.
