Hey guys, newbie here. I bought a 1990 GS500E about three weeks ago and being that I didn't even have my license until I took the MSF BRC two weeks ago, I haven't actually had a chance to ride it much. After looking at it, there are a few problems that I have to address, but the one that's bugging me most is the fact that the bike is revving when I turn the bars right, usually up to about 5k rpms until I straighten the bars out.
The previous owner installed a V&H full exhaust on it and had the carbs rejetted accordingly, so I'm assuming he did something with the throttle cable (maybe even changed it). I've looked at the owners manual and according to that, the cable is in the right routing: down, behind the "ear" of the headlight, and then back through the triangle of the frame. the picture has the throttle cable outside of the "ear." With the bars straight or turned, if I move the cable (push/pull/wiggle) it sometimes alleviates this, so I believe it's being pinched somewhere. Would it be ok to put the cable out from behind the headlight bracket and on the outside like in the picture above? How would I go about disconnecting the throttle cable from the handlebars so I don't need to disconnect it from under the tank?
And I might also add that there isn't really any play in the throttle itself. I can't move the grip at all without encountering resistance.
there's a little notch near the throttle cable, slacken it a bit to give it some more freeplay

If you know which end of a screwdriver is which, dismantle the switchblock and it will be obvious.

And while your at it, grease the throttle tube.
Though personally, I'd just add the proper throttle free-play back in and see if that fixes the issue and be done with it.
(Warning... I am a complete noob to this type of stuff but anyways...)
Out of curiosity... you say it "revs"... does it accelerate as well? My only thought is that if it is revving and but not accelerating that it might be the clutch cable instead.
Just a thought
My F (and I assume all F models) has the throttle cables (the newer bikes have 2) routed where you want it to go. So I don't see why you can't move it there.
Thanks for the help guys. Rerouted the cable to the outside of the headlight bracket and it fixed it. Also adjusted the freeplay while I was at it.
