Title: fuel tank cap
Post by: GS500LAWTON on November 12, 2011, 04:24:49 AM
I just got a 1995 GS500 from my brother in law for free. It has 6k miles on it and is in good condition, except...We can't get the fuel door latch to release. I tried spraying some wd 40 on it..no luck..also, the front wheel won't turn....it sat last winter outside. Any suggestions?
thanks,
Dan

Try pushing down on the gas cap as you turn the key?

The front caliper is probably seized up. Unbolt it at the mounts and see if it moves then. If that's not the problem, then it's the wheel bearings. If the wheel bearings are seized up.........well then........it sat out for more than 1 winter.

if nothing else on the fuel cap, take it out and tear it apart

Thank you for the suggestions. And, yes, I knew about pushing down while turning the key. One of the allen bolts won't come out of the tank. The piece under it is spinning. My brother in law started the bike at the beginning of this past summer. When he moved in July, the front wheel rolled just fine...then...whammo...seized.
thanks again...

You can't remove the gas cap unit unless it is unlocked and open.
If key turns and it unlocks, try prying it up. Could be the rubber gasket is stuck.

The key will only move slightly, not enough to release the latch. I'm gonna try the PB Blaster and see if it that frees it up. I already bought a replacement fuel door. One with the a key. I just need to get this one off! Thanks for the input.

If you're replacing it, get a BIG ARSE screwdriver, stick in the lock, turn hard and rip that sucker open.

thanks again!
