Title: Chain question
Post by: jmelchio on November 13, 2011, 07:23:32 PM
Hi Everyone,

I noticed my chain needed a re-tension so I decided to do that today. For some reason I saw something unusual this time around. In the past the stretch in the chain is always very even but this time around it is very un-even. Any idea why this would be happening all of a sudden?

I figure it's time for a new chain and cogs but if I did something to cause the un-even stretch I like to understand it.

Any suggestions welcome.

The wisdom I've always heard is that if the slack is too uneven to get a measurement you're comfortable calling accurate, it's time for a new chain.

I've never heard that it signals anything in particular being wrong beyond the chain being too old and worn out, though, so I dunno if I'd think too hard about anything else being wrong.

I've also heard that if it's time for a new chain it's also probably also time for new sprockets.

Thanks, I know if I replace the chain the sprockets will need changing as well. The chain has 20,000 miles on it so I guess it may just be normal wear, I was just surprised it was so un-even all of a sudden. Never seen that before.

Put the bike on the center stand and turn the back wheel Slowly while looking at the chain. You're trying to find Kinked Links.

Addy had a photo of them somewhere.

They cause increased sprocket wear and uneven tension as the chain goes around.
