Title: Custom stock exhaust!
Post by: Kms254 on November 13, 2011, 07:53:41 PM
The previous owner of my bike had some crazy contraption/mish-mash of an exhaust. The mid-pipe was welded only about 20% of the way around. The weld that was there look like popcorn. I knew this before I bough it, it's not a big deal I have a welder and love using it.

So I cut out the old bad weld and started thinking. The old muffler was not origional although it was Suzuki it was big and my friend said my bike sounded like a scooter. So I decided to see what I could do.

I removed the stainless shield and ground down the welds and filled the rivit holes. I then cut the tip off and then cut the end at the weld. I removed the baffleing and then cut the muffler down to 7 inches. That size looked good. I the cut the baffaling down and rewrapped it. Put it all back together and welded the end cap back on. I smoothed out the welds and then tacked the mid-pipe back together.

I need to take it apart now and finish up the mid-pipe welds and then smooth it out. I also need to reweld the tip back on. Once all the welding is done and cleaned up I plan on stripping the entire exhaust and painting it with a high heat black paint. If I like it in the long run I migh get it ceramic coated.

Let me know what you think. When it's done I'll get a video.

No offense, but it really doesn't look so great in that pic.

It's not done, it still needs to be finished and painted. I was just tacking the mid pipe while it was on the bike.

I'd have to agree with bomb, but i'll hold off final judgement until you finish it off    :tongue2:

nice work on shortening it. i love to play with my welder too. any project i can do to use it i will. i would have only one suggestion. extend the mid pipe and make it a high mount muffler. that way it raises it up and fills that open space between the tire and rear fender and would make it look less like a side car or an afterthought. just an idea. keep up the good custom work.

So I did a bit more welding and grinding and some more welding. I threw a coat of high heat flat black on it to keep it from flash rusting. I go back and forth on the look of the muffler. It is louder and I can tell it has leaned the bike out even more. Lucky for me I am running a really dirty air filter.  So I'm working on getting jets from Buddha and I have a K&N LB in the mail. Its a bit louder than I hoped it to be and at idle you can hear each cylinder hit. I'll ride around a bit with it the way it is and see how I feel about it. It is quieter than running straight off the mid pipe. I just cranked bike up in my garage off the mid pipe and even at idle it was way to loud.
