Title: Piston cleaning help needed
Post by: Tombstones81 on November 21, 2011, 09:44:24 AM
Since I have pretty much messed with every part of my motorcycle but the engine internals so far, figure why not have some fun & educate myself.

Also if I am going to go over the entire bike in my rebuild, why neglect the motor?

did a google search and read a few things and everyone suggests removing the pistons. (yay more work!)

few questions:
does it look like I should in the pics below? (probably obvious)

is there a detailed walkthrough for the GS? mines a 94

should I? will it end up running alot better? (might be obvious that it will but first time into the engine internals)

there a list of items I will probably be looking at replacing or possibly replacing?
the gaskets so far look perfectly fine

also appears surprisingly for a 94, its the first time anything past the top cover was ever removed.
Heck I'm even doubting the top cover was ever removed (to get to the valves)

thanks  :thumb:

also, lil OT.
Checking and adjusting the valves if need be.
easier and able to do it with the motor out when I put it all back together?
or wait until its back in the bike?

that WAS going to be my last step before hitting the road next season.

That level of carbon buildup looks normal to me. I don't think cleaning the pistons is necessary.

A very hot motor while revved to a high idle and water sprayed into the intake air will get the carbon off as much as you can get it off wihtout scraping the thing.
Cool.

But, if you really want to work, just use a soft brass bristle brush.  Just cover up the cam chain channel.

isn't it odd that people think a small portion of constantly reoccurring hell is supposed to be shiny and pretty ?

if you really want to put it back together clean, soak the pistons in PBBlaster over night, toothbrush, then one more o'rnighter, one more toothbrush. they will look like new, until you run the second tank of this crap they call gas. then it will look exactly the same again.

have fun with the learning  O0

If you want to just remove carbon while pistons are in place make sure you leave a ring about 1/4 "
of carbon around the top out side edge, this helps seal the top of the bore other wise you will probably smoke for a bit till a new seal is formed (old mechanics trick )other wise people reckon you havnt removed carbon cause it smokes from start up ..
