Title: kill switch, high beam switch
Post by: knowles on November 24, 2011, 01:27:21 PM
Want to replace the two switches on my bike 89. My switches all work but are pretty sun faded. On eBay they have a 06 set of switches. The high beam switch looks like it will work. Question is will the kill switch with duel throttle cables, will this work on a single cable system? Can I just use a cable from my bike and plug one of the holes? Looked on the search only found people that had problems with thier switch.

It will not work.
The connectors are different.
There are plenty of good, clean 89-2000 switch units available. if none today, keep watching. You'll find them in a week or two.
This photo has each left and right controls for 1989-2000 (female connectors) and 2001-2011 (male connectors)

There are some plastic polishes that may be able to restore the original look.

Dual pull throttle is not easily modifiable to work with a single pull carb. The single pull tube has a stopper so that you can't rotate the throttle back past fully closed. Dual pull throttles typically don't.

ebay is loaded with them

The plastic has oxidized. You might restore one with rubbing compound to remove the surface. You would probably lose the lettering. Easier to spend $15 for a new set.

Buying controls from Europe you often get the passing switch and a headlight on/off. Though I'd leave the headlights on, the headlight switch on the right could be used to control accent lighting or 4 way flashers (I'll post a video later on how to make 4 way flashers for our GS500's).
