Hello Everyone! I just joined up after purchasing a 2005 gs500F 3 weeks ago. It's been 8 years since my last bike and I'm so glad to be riding again. But not all is well in paradise:
It seems that I'm getting gas to the carbs through all the fuel line and petcocks, but the carb bowls aren't filling up. I think I accidentally ran it out of gas after having the tank off and forgetting to turn the tank petcock back on after reconnecting the fuel lines. I've read of some people having problems with the float(?) getting stuck, up or down, in the carbs after running out of gas. So I'm hoping mine are just stuck and cleaning the carbs is the solution. With that being said it's been a decade since I've been inside a set of carbs, does anyone have any good links with plenty of large pictures and schematics. I read this: http://www.gstwin.com/carb_work.htm (http://www.gstwin.com/carb_work.htm) but would like something a little more. It doesn't have to be gs500 specific, just something to help me remember what the names of all the jets and other parts are and what their functions are.
still a noob when it comes to carbs, will hopefully be breaking into them and learning some in's and out's soon.
til i'm knowledgeable enough to help.. here's an awesome thread on carbs and different parts. big up to ben2go for the write up:

this marked up photos are from the older style carbs, but if you go to the second page someone norwaygti took photos of the newer style carbs, reference the first photos for what's what.
there is a whole thread on just cards in the general section... i have a 2005 as well and i just posted pics up of my carbs there all the way in the end. but the guy who started the thread has a better description of what everything is on his original write up man.

theres the link. let me know if you got any questions. i know a bit but everything i know i learned from ppl on here!
as the saying goes on here.. " When in doubts, just buddah it" lol
Just checking: after you ran the bowls dry while the tank-mounted petcock was in the off position and then turned it back to the on-position, but before you tried to start the bike again, did you put the frame-mounted petcock on PRI (prime) for a minute or so? If the bowls have been emptied completely, as in your case, priming for a minute or so is likely to be necessary to fill them back up.
yeah i have done that a few time lol.. all i did was put it to prime waited about a min or a few seconds try to start it, it would not.
then waited for another min for more fuel to reach the bowls and then it started just fine.. when you try to start it you pas more fuel through the chambers. also make sure your battery has a charge after its been off the bike.
just keep in mind that the on/off fuel switch on the tank pet chicken has to be almost perfectly on the ON position if i twist mine past on my bike wont run. Idk if thats just the 05s or all the bikes.. but i do know that the case for me lol.
also make sure you connected everything back in the right order as far as the little hoses and what not.

Thanks for the links, they were exactly what I was looking for.
I got it all sorted out. I thought that the tank petcock turned all the way in one direction to turn on and all the way in the other direction to turn off. I didn't realize both stops were off and the center was on. Once I realized that I just had to put it all back together.
But now it's raining :icon_neutral: I was hoping to get a quick ride in yesterday afternoon to test out the new barback risers, 1" up 1" back (the reason I had the tank off in the first place.
lol np, its raining here to man.. that and some nasty wind gusts.
was gonna go for a ride to but u know :bs:
Was there reason to remove the tank to add handlebar risers? Never have had to remove tank to do any handle bar swaps, work or other things (unless you were changing throttle or choke cables and needed to get at the carbs).
I needed to slightly reroute the cables for a little more stretch to keep them from rubbing on the fork at full lock. A riser that moves the bars back in addition to up uses a lot more cable then a normal bar riser.
OK. Thanks for explaining.
You'll still need to use 'prime' on the frame petcock to get it going, the vacuum tap there won't flow fuel unless the engine's running and it won't run without fuel. 'Prime' bypasses the vacuum tap.
I knew that I needed to use prime, I was using prime, but thank you for clearing that up for anyone who reads this thread searching for a solution to their own problem.
