Title: I laugh at my bad luck! - questions also included -
Post by: J_Walker on December 07, 2011, 10:21:07 PM
Well I wanted to test my new 4 season jacket, IT works good, first jacket ever owned so can't write much pros and cons, kept me warm that's the good part. anyway. My bike started to do something funny, It started to chug along like it was engine braking itself than I was like "okay time to go home! AND QUICKLY, Not to fast tho the speed limit.." anyway Heading home about 1.5 mile out it started chugging again, this time with 2 back fires 1 sec between than a automatic shut down. I was like FML Plzz dont be seized. after about 3 mins of messing with the parts I can reach It turned over, BUT REALLY bad chugging. about 1/4 the way home shut off, would not turn back over, so I held the clutch road home that way. Also a few back fires while riding, Seems like im going to be taking this sucka apart tomorrow.. YAY finding out things I have to replace that I wont be able to afford!! :)

anyone have any input? Other than, IM SCREWED.

Edit: The term "Ride like you stole it" Next time I need to steal a better one :D

I can't remember: what are the intake/exhaust mods on your bike? Sounds like a fuel delivery issue but I can't be sure.

Most likely a petcock issue or a blocked gas tank vent. A search would provide you with more info than I can type though.......

LOL, this is what I was thinking.  When ever you are unsure of things always check the plugs.  If they are whicteish then you are running lean.  If they are wet then you are rich.  It sounds like your not getting fuel though.  There are drain tubes on the bottom of your carbs.  You use a flat head screw driver to open them.  If fuel comes out then your carb is getting fuel.  Remember to try both carb bowls.  If there is fuel getting to the carb bowls then theres is something wrong with the carb.  Something might be plugged and might need to be cleaned.  Anyway this is what I would do if I were in your situation.  Good luck.

That is not what they mean, maybe the main tube is clogged, if you switch to the reserve and it still doesn't run then you can elminate the petcock as the issue and keep going down the line.  If it does, then you have most liley found your issue.

Is there a loose leaf intermittently covering your air filter?
Fuel flow?
Valve adjustment?

IF videos is what you guys want, I can do that.

But before when I tried to start it up, It wasn't idling high even with choke. highest at 2rpm Try to rev it, and it dies.. Are you guys sure this isn't something with the engine? cause after 2 fail start ups it wont even start up, now I checked my carbs nothing was clugged, at lease I could see.. By the way could it be my battery? Sounds funny, but after trying to get fuel back into the carbs, while I was trying to turn it on, the battery started making this funny clicking sound, not the start up sound. and the lights front/back started quickly blinking. but all the lights arnt dim, I'm so confused what is going on, video tomorrow..

Put the battery on a trickle charger - like a Battery Tender or similar.

How did you check to see the carbs aren't clogged? There are a lot of REALLY tiny passages. Basically, if you haven't cleaned them, they aren't clean.

Ship them to the Buddha...

Are the screws stripped completely? Take a dremel tool or something similar and cut a groove across the head that you can use a flat screwdriver in. Or you can try vise grips.
If there is some traction left ( partially stripped but the screwdriver sort of grabs ) -get some valve grinding compound and put it on your phillips tip driver.... Get an extra set of hands to hold the carbs for you and while trying to loosen with the screwdriver- thump the screwdriver with a hammer as you start to turn. The grinding compound will give the screwdriver a little extra grip and so will thumping the screwdriver ( helps shock it loose sometimes too ).

or buy this : http://www.sears.com/craftsman-impact-driver/p-00947641000P  or http://www.harborfreight.com/impact-screwdriver-set-with-case-37530.html

Haven't used the harbor freight one...I have the Sears one.

Replace the screws with allen screws.

You'll look considerably more silly than doing a kick-start, but you can push start it:

You wouldn't want a cb360. They are under powered, have their own charging issues, top end oiling issues, frames that flex under pressure, etc.

What would be a good older bike like the style of the CB360 big? Just wondering. there is lots of info on new bikes and what not, But I like old bikes. Only cause when it comes down to it. Those bikes are what MADE what we have today, without them. you wouldn't have your 1250cc fuel injected 4 clynd inline engines.

Like the CB360? Hands down closest is the cb350. Made from 68 to 73, about 325cc's, cheap to buy, cheap to maintain, HUGE aftermarket and original parts support, parts can swap between models of the era, etc, etc. I believe it is the go-to bike for anybody to learn to wrench on.

There are some great inline 4's but they can be expensive and/or complicated. The CB400F made from 75 to 77 is an incredible bike. Want something similar to your GS500? Look at some pre-84 GS450's.

Thanks Big I will check those out.

ALSO IF anyone actually reads what I write thats not 100% directed to them, I got my bike running today. I use a newly friended riding bud's air compressor to blow out Every FREAKING hole in the carbs. And she works again. Still need to get a battery, I've just been using a jumper ^_^ She purrrs likea kitten :) It actually sounds A LOT better than when I bought it! soo.. What to do next.. Replace brake pads/make money for new tires?... Oh How do I long for new tires...

Hahaha. I've done that a couple of mornings when it was really cold and my oil got really thick.
