Maybe a silly question, but can you bump start it with the starter fuse blown?
How does titling work in VA? I know in MD and PA you are screwed if you don't have a title or the last titled owner willing to do some paperwork. You might be able to make some extra $$$ from people on this board if you can get clear titles for bikes. I know I have a parts bike that would be rod worthy if it had a . Congrats on the new bike and good luck wrenching :thumb:

Added first post here to do better write up on the project.
Original Post
Take 2 on another 2006 gsF parts bike!
The Hunt:
Found a set of full fairings and tank on craigs. Started talking with the seller and found out he's selling the whole bike. So I hit the road for ~2 hour drive, met the younger kid 1 state over, and made the deal. Bought this one for more than $300 less than my last 2006 parts bike.
Bike Info:
A title-less 2006 gsF with 127 miles on the clock. Fairings are in OK shape, looks to have been driveway dropped, some scratches and a couple small cracks. Tank is rusted to shaZam!(luckily I still have a mint black tank from the last 06) everything else on the bike is near perfect condition. Tires are in great shape w/o any signs of rotting. Not hardly a speck of dirt on this thing!
First day of wrenching:
Yesterday was the first time I got to invest a little time in her; The PO had removed all plastics, carbs, some hosing, all lights, and some electrical connections among other things. I proceeded to put the carbs back on, replugged any missing connections, dropped a battery in her and hit the start button.. nothing! Not even a click, the headlight did cut out but it wouldn't even attempt to turn over.
So I went a made another bourbon and coke, found my manual and headed back downstairs
Now with another drink in hand I had a look, this time less head strong. Started by checking things off the list I knew; kill switch, side stand, in/out gear, clutch switch... whowoulddathought the clutch switch was unplugged :dunno_white: Plugged it up, rechecked and hit the starter button. POP! starter solenoid fuse blown
Not fishing for any guess of what it may be(at least not quite yet), since I didn't have anymore time to investigate. Although if you have an idea I'm more than willing to put it on the list to check!
I was hoping it would be a replug and ride situation, but now i finally have a GS of my dreams! One that doesn't run, but is fixable!! I'm pretty excited to dig into this thing. Unfortunately with work, snowboard season starting, and a new girlfriend my play time is at an all time low.
I'll get a better photo of it, but for now:
Messing around with the new glass for the t2i:
Progress might be slow, but this bike WILL run again. If everything keeps going well, I'll be titling this beast and making it my primary moto
Thanks for peeping my newest project!
Good News!
Got another hour to dig around, found an old thread where another member was having solenoid fuse problems. He swapped batteries and had no further problems. Gave it a shot with the battery from my 04, and sure enough was able to get a Strong turn over. Now i'll be freshening up the usual(plugs, oil, filter etc..) and we'll she what she can do!
Probably won't have anymore time until next week to work on it..
Bad News!
Went to the DMV and got the biggest run around ever. I'm claiming the bike as an abandoned vehicle to try and get a title. short story: I was PISSED haha. Semi-long story: they were telling me I have to do all the abandoned title forms online, OK. I was trying to get a vehicle history report which is Required to be done in person, and is not offered online. Had the correct form filed out and was literally pointing to what I needed and saying "I'm not filing the abandoned vehicle forms." NO ONE could understand. :technical:
Better News!
Took an hour yesterday morning to go back by the DMV. FINALLY was able to talk with someone that knew what she was talking about. I feel confident that I will be able to get this thing titled! I submitted one form and started the wheels moving, now a waiting period then send another form. Then another waiting period, annd theeen I can be issued a full title! hopefully haha..
I'll end up with a little less then $50 invested in trying to get it titled, so if it falls through I'll just chalk it up to the game with no hard feelings
If the rain holds out this afternoon, i'll be swapping oil/filter and see how she's runs. I need to read up on wiki again for the break-in process since this units only got 127 miles on her!
Nice! How did I miss this thread?! Keep posting and MAKE time steezin! Great pics by the way. (you the man)
haha preciate it mang!
On lunch today I'll be heading to the post to mail the previous owner the last form needed. If all goes as planned I should have her titled by the end of this month!
I'm meeting a guy this afternoon for some extra bits and pieces, so start up will have to wait a few more days
HAHA I laugh at my own high hopes of having the title by the end of this month :icon_lol:
Still playing the waiting game. No word back from the previously registered owner. 20 more days max until the certified letter gets returned, and I'll be able to get the title.
Will hopefully be trying to start her this week!
:woohoo:
She's up and running!! Video below(sorry it was late and i didn't feel like editing in music..) and for those who are bored I wrote more about the finger numbing work involved.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLWkK_uGjTg
The parts bike is lower on the list so its outside while 04 is inside my shop with no forks.. Finally found the determination to face the cold and get the last few little things knocked out. With some liquid warmth and a headlamp you can accomplish anything! Luckily i didn't have much left to do. First up was getting the carbs back in and hooked up. Then some fuel so i used the tank and petcock from my 2004. Bolted the exhaust up, and dropped in some fresh oil.
Double check, turned the key and nothing but a good strong turn over. sounded starved for fuel. tripled checked that i had the petcock on prime, yup.. took 2 seconds then it hit me :embarassed: tank petcock was still off haha. flipped that over, and gave her a go.. got some heavy sputters, a few pops then some life. stopped to fix a pretty bad exhaust leak. it didn't matter it was running! although the more i listened the less i liked it. sounded like only 1 cylinder popping. used the quick trick of pulling the wire to see if both cylinders were chugging. pulled the first, sounded the same. yanked the second, immediately died. first one shocked me still so i new it was getting power.
jumped back in the shop and grabbed a rusty spare plug. dropped it in and hit the starter, bloaw!!! sounded great. started then the choke took over and it rev'd right up. i was stoked! let it warm up for a minute or two. checked around the bike, everything looked good. pulled the clutch and dropped it in first with no problems. eased on the clutch and got excellent response. then started to mess with the throttle a bit, i could rev it slightly, but any drastic throttle increase would bog it down. i know i have read plenty of threads with similar problems, but figured it was a good stopping point for tonight.
Most updates to come :thumb:

thank ya thank ya!
i'm really excited to have it up and running. first time i've brought a parts bike back from the dead instead of hoisting it onto the chopping block.
back at our home mountain snowboarding for the weekend. next week i plan on tuning up some more and trying to get it out on the neighborhood roads for some more testing.
sent one more form to the bikes orginal state to confirm that there is no liens on it.
also already have a long time friend committed to buying my 2004 if i can get the 06 road ready. i'm pretty stoked on that, i'll have another friend to ride and wrench with
I've dubbed here Gabrielle. Gabby for short since she's young and I expect her to be talking to me none stop her whole life haha.
Still a waiting game on the title.. I will know for sure by Feb 10th, and if all's well with original state my title should be printed without a hitch.
I got a few minutes to mess with her last night. I put my airbox on, fully charged the battery to see if that would help any. I probably didn't let her warm up as much as i should have, but it was getting later and didn't want to be a bother. She's still getting major bogging with throttle is cracked. It will idle fine but when any throttle is opened it get nasty, lots of popping, rough revs, and would die every now and then. I'm going to pick some new spark plugs up after work, and maybe swap the coils from my 04 just to be sure.
It's running, now just to get it running right :thumb:
I can see why you need the fairings, LOL. VERY nice find, and the frame is SO CLEAN!!
Didn't get anytime last night to get down there.. Back to make some more turns on the local mountain this weekend. I'll get the new plugs in next week and see how she does.
@ xune - Still have the complete set of black/grey 2006 fairing collecting dust in the shop. Was just after those blue tail fairings of yers haha
Hell yes! Just came home to find a notice of a certified letter return!! Pretty sure that's the letter I sent to the previous owner. If unopened.. I just staple it to the LAST form I have to submit :woohoo:
That's 1 of the last 2 hoops I have to jump through before getting this baby titled. Now just to hear back from the DMV if there's a lien holder. If no(and letter is unopened) I will be able to title her by Feb 10th as planned.
Wish me luck!
Hey just out of curiosity, what kind of camera are you using to take these pics? The bokeh seems a little too crisp to be a P&S. Is it a DSLR of some kind? If so, what lens are you using?
shooting with a canon t2i. the photos in this thread were with my fixed 50mm. check out the video i post of the first startup, i have a clip recorded with the fixed 50 as well my sigma 10mm fisheye.

Doubt I'll pull the t2i out until next week though. I have a 4 day shredcation this coming up Thursday, so work will be my main task for these 3 short days
Gotta work hard to play harder!
Went to the post on lunch. The certified letter came back unopened!! but with an insufficient address stamp (http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll129/steezin_and_wheezin/smilin/sadbanana.gif)
Never got an apartment number, so kind of at a dead end on that.
Took some wind from the sail, but still have the vehicle history report!
My motivation is high on these projects, but my time is at an all time low.. It's starting to really get to me. It's been too long since I had a good chunk of time to wrench. A warm summer weekend with nothing but moto's on the schedule sounds like a dream!
My check for the vehicle history report was finally cashed!! That will tell me without a doubt if I can get this damn thing titled. Should hear back from that in the next few weeks.

That's the later version of the Rebel T1i right? I have the old Rebel XTi.
I bought Sigma's f/1.4 50mm lens, and on our cameras, that's more like an 80mm. Paid $499 for it and then later sold it for $400 on Craigslist.
I love my Rebel. Too bad it doesn't shoot video...oh well.
:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:
Got her up and running pretty well. Swapped the coil off the 04 and she seemed enjoy it. I got her warmed up and drove around the neighborhood a couple times. Will be ordering some new coils here soon. Other than that going to hold off on working on it anymore until I am certain I can title it.
I finally received the vehicle history report. It had be sold a few times, I'm the 4th owner. Excited that it has no liens, and it registered to the PO's older brother just as he said. Just one more letter to send, and this long road to title will be over. Not sure it will end good or bad, but I'm hopeful.

Yep xti -> t1i -> t2i -> t3i
that's sick! i went with the canon model f1.4 50mm. my sigma f2.8 10mm fisheye is insanely good. oh man you are definitely missing out with no video.
I AM DYING not being able to wrench on a gs. By the end of next week I will be at the end of the road on my title chase. I'm still pretty certain i will be able to get a title for this parts bike i've dubbed Gabby, but there's still things that can go wrong.
Looking into another parts bike if my current frame is unable to be titled. Have a couple good picks for full gsF parts bike at reasonable prices. So this ~130 mile on the beast will roll down the road again!
With only paint and a few small items left to get to complete my dream gs. Once I get a titled frame all this pile of pretty bits will begin to take shape.
See my old 2004 gsF project thread for photos of stack of parts to be bolted on:

Tax return's in! Thinking of getting a few thing to help in my parts bikes/projects. Going to get some extra fuel line, a motion pro auxiliary tank, compression gauge, and set of deep well metric sockets.
Nice job and great pics and angles. Keep it going.
sorry steez i just scroll down and skip everything you say, looking for more of those incredible photos,...
haha no worries cbr, i'll feed the need! check back later today :thumb:

Her current state:
Title game is coming to a close. My certified letter has passed its 15 day waiting period, and should be on its way back to me now. I've burned too much time waiting on CA's vehicle history report and now with this certified letter. I've missed my deadline on the process I'm taking through the DMV.. so another waiting period, but this time i've got the drz to keep my occupied. After this waiting period(20 days, i believe) and with the certified letter in hand, I will have my title.

20 more days. So in 3 weeks you'll have the bike ready to ride, right?
Might be able to go riding after work tomorrow if your interested.
So have you decided on a paint scheme?
How about this.....

It should be Orange and black stripes, not white. The GS is a Predator, not prey
Ready to ride now slack! i've got the D'arcy my deezer to keep me grinnin on the roads. Doubt I could handle the seat for a snowshoe trek, but have been getting some miles put down around town. Any afternoons looking good around here, give me a shout for sure
haha (http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll129/steezin_and_wheezin/smilin/throwup.gif) don't think i could stomach a zebra stripped gs! but damn that fender is insane looking!!
I'll be continuing my dream scheme that i had planned for the '04:

starting to make up my mind on paint! i'm the worst at making decisions when i have such a wide range of choices
i found a ~2002 for sale across the pond with almost the exact scheme i've been picturing. only differences is mine will have; an oil cooler of course, dual headlights w/ small screen, white wheels, jardine will get black exhaust wrap, and i'm thinking the full suzuki decal w/ no stripe on tank. haven't made up my mind on the tail fairing decals yet..
quick chop w/o decals:

I'm with you on that. Blegh...it would be hard to make that scheme look good on something with tons of fairings like the Hayabusa, let alone a naked GS. And the wheels too? Jeeze what was that dude thinking??
As an aside...that blue scheme looks amazing. Now I wish I had a blue bike. :technical:
Thank Kijona! I'm excited to get this damned title, or a title-able frame. I want use all these parts i've been saving for, dreaming of, and spending my money on for months haha
Still waiting for my certified letter to come in. Was supposed to have a 15 day waiting period then it would be mailed back to me. Here we are at 23+ days since the first delivery attempt. Called the USPS office last week and got a nonchalant, "oh yeah we mailed our returned cert letters back yesterday" Another 4 days past and still no update on my tracking number.
Its ok though, as i can't rush until 3/26 which is the end of my next waiting period through the DMV.
Slowly getting closer to knowing if i can or can't title the current frame.
As a backup plan, i've got 2 more parts bikes lined up. Going to pick them up this weekend. A 96 and and 89 both stripped to frame. The 96 has a good titled frame and engine. The 89 has untitled frame and bad engine, but a set of beautiful triple and OG Clip-ons. If this current frame isn't title-able i'll swap all parts onto titled frame. If my current frame works out- I'll either part the basket case bikes out, or find the time and motivation to build another!
EDIT- typo'd.. the 96 has the good engine and frame w/ 16k on the clock. the 89 has bad engine and a straight frame, but untitled.

Steezin all your camera shots look like art to me.
I was going to say that too. You a photographer for a day job?
Hahah nah, I'm an architectural technician, or a draftsman if you want to be a d!ck about it haha
i told myself i wouldn't become the hipster kid with his dslr taking photos of anything and everything.. but
i bought the Canon T2i to use for filming, but have been loving taking some really crisp shots. still need to get a photo program so i can start shooting raw images. that's where the quality and crispness really starts to show.
I'm actually working on filming my first little video edit of the season!
Warning long post!
Riding season's here, and I'm Sick and Tired of waiting for the USPS and DMV to cooperate and give me the title on Gabby(this 06 parts bike). So I decided to buy more GS parts bikes!!
This was the dirtiest pick i've gone for. Mainly driven by the 89 clip ons, a titled frame, And running engine. That way I had options on whether parting out and doing a ground up build.
After weighing my options I drove ~5 hours east to pick up a 96 and 89 both stripped to frame. The 96 has a titled frame and running engine. The frame was primed and then interest was lost. The PO had another 2006 gsF painted camaro green(no bad looking at all) and said work/kids took over the project time. The 89 has a bad engine(top end 1/2 removed) and a none titled frame(painted with dark glitery purple it looked like :cookoo:), but has great set of triples and clips! bars are a bit bent so they will be replaced.

I'm going to take a bit of inventory tomorrow(weather permitting) depending on what i have and what i need. I will be building 1 complete bike from these parts while i battle the dmv/usps to get the 2006's(Gabby) titled.
Last night I started to regain control of my shop after a long winter at the slopes. With these new parts bikes and all my current parts my shop is going to be a suzukilanche hahah. Another lucky hunter!
I was thinking abot getting one of those (EBC rotor) how much are they and do they make a big difference?
'Preciate it Tomb! glad to hear yer pickin' went well too!
@ Knowles - i can't comment on the EBC rotor. i got it in a parts pick and haven't installed or used it yet. I would it won't be any noticeable difference, more of as ascetics mod. Check back after i get one of these parts bikes together and will be sure to give updates on all my mods
Finally! USPS updated my tracking info. my 15 day waiting period on the certified letter turned into a 1 month and 1 week wait for ANY updates. NOW! More waiting... Gotta wait for letter to get back here, then a 20 dayer for next step in DMV process. Then maybe sometime before I pass on to meet my maker I'll get her titled haha
:woohoo: :woohoo: Certified letter finally made it home :woohoo: :woohoo:

I was mulling it over and realized a big uh-oh i should have picked up on a looong time ago. The VA dmv pointed me to CA for the last registered owner. From CA's vehicle history report, it showed someone in WV tried to register it in their name, but there was no "Owner Issue" date. The last owner issue date was for the lady in CA. I think i should i have sent the certified letter to the CA registered owner, because if the last registered owner was in WV the VA dmv would have told me to search there. This stuff makes my head spin, but i think I've figured out what NOT to do now haha
I AM SICK AND TIRED OF WAITING THOUGH!! I have a title in my name for the 96 gsE frame I'm selling. Going to get tags for it and slap them on the 2006. By the time the 96's frame gets sold I should be closer, if not already have, the actual title for the 2006 gsF. In the meantime I'm going to walk into the dmv after my next waiting period(4/18), play dumb, and hope they give me the title anyway hahah.
So most all of my spare time will be going to into getting Gabby road ready. I'm thinking about taking friday off for a solid 3 day weekend to work on her!
Not much progress.. I loosened up the rear suspension in prep for the r6 shock. Started to remove the PAR system. Found some more rust that will be cleaned, and resprayed before rebuilding. Looked over the gauges for second and realized i'm missing some bits and pieces. Started a list of parts to buy from Adidasguy, and a list of new parts I need. Put a rear wheel on her, covered the carbs, snapped a photo, and covered her for a while.
The Drz project is picking up, not putting the GS on the back burner, more like temporarily on the side burner..
STOKED!
Just got back from the DMV with a freshly printed clean/clear title for little ol' Gabby! Will get her insured and plated once I get close to the final package.
Let the wrenching begin!
Was too stoked to wrench.. I ordered my r6 sleeve/bolt to finish that installation, and snatched a set of new dampers for the gauges
Also got my white wheels with bt003's on them. Unfortunately the rotor bolts I stole from my 06 parts bike's front wheel have a longer shoulder than the older bolts. Just need to source the older/shorter style, apply blue loctite, and torque. Then I'll be able to stand back and smile! As it will be the first time I've see my white wheels on the gsF frame.
Going to start working on getting the rust cleaned up and resprayed once the rain stops
I have a lot of stock forks if you need some.
-Jessie
Had a spare second while pulling some parts from the bin. Double checked the rotor bolts and all went in with ease! I think my friend was just being over cautious and didn't want to damage anything. Probably didn't have the rotor lined up exactly.. So i'll be getting the bearings replaced in both wheels, cleaning, threadlock and torque ebc rotor on front/new oem rotor on rear, and a brand new sprocket on rear as well!
another taste with the new tar:

Loving this whole thread! Keep up the good work Steezin! :icon_mrgreen:
Got a bit of time after checking my friends valves to work on the project. Not a big update though, but its long winded haha i guess i'm in the mood to type
Started removing the PAIR components while finishing up my friends. It makes it much easier to figure out what's what when you have another to reference. My PAIR block off plates should be in this week.
Took a lazy attempt at wire brushing/sanding the rust off the sub frame bar below the battery box. Got some anti rust semi-flat black paint and gave it a couple coats. I'm terrible at painting, even coats, waiting X amount of time between, etc.etc. Turned out fine for me! Also got my r6 sleeve and bolt sized up and the r6 shock installed. Right now most parts I put on are just snug tight. I'll go back over the whole bike and torque it all to spec
(http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll129/steezin_and_wheezin/IMG_3278.jpg)
Hung the nissin caliper w/ sv adapter plate, and black hel SS brake line test fitted on front. I did a quick size up on the rear and even though its a short line i think i'll be able to make it work.
Went to install my new coils and realized i lost some the screws and spacers for one side. Added more parts to my parts list. Then gave the white wheels my first round of soap and water. Next round i'll use some rims cleaner

Another Saturday of wrenching :woohoo:
With some good photos from Adidas I got my Gimbel rearsets installed! I'm pumped on the final product!! Finished up and had enough time to go cast a few lines :thumb:
Started to test fit everything to realize that when she was blown off her center stand it bent the peg mount slightly. Not noticeable with stock rear set, but heavily exaggerated by the gimbel's. So much that there was clearance issues between the peg bolt and swing arm. Again with some help from Adidas(I'm sure I owe him some stout brews and more karma corn!) I put a spare rear set on and pursuaded it to return to its rightful place.

i like the rear sets but can't pay the $$$ for them right now, good project. :thumb:
Great thread.
Please oil that chain, its crying fir attention.
Cheers
I hear ya knowles! Gimbel's were expensive, but Well worth it if rear sets are what yer after.
New chain and sprockets are sitting quietly waiting for install. Just got to find the motivation to get the stock chain off. Will probably remove the swing arm to pull the chain and re-grease her swing arm bearings.
She has been sitting awhile, and I'll be swapping rear wheel and exhaust. I figure while I've got her half naked I'd touch on everything I could. Adidas' Phenix is an inspiration to make my Gabby as clean as she can be. I've been constantly cleaning anything I can see while wrenching haha. Rare for me as I'm usually the one who doesn't care about cleanliness as long as all maintenance is in order.
Sorry no more photos :flipoff:
Got some down time, and I'm bore again. Whipped together a list of things still to be done. It's more for me, feel free to ignore;
*MOVED TO DO LIST TO NEXT PAGE*
 120 day bump warning on my own project? I should be damned!
Well I've been enjoying tinkering and fixing mopeds, but I'm past due for moto wrenching. So I put my new forks(thanks again balt!) and a spare front wheel on. Now Gabby's back out of my parts bin(shed) and in the shop. Got the shop 1/2 organized, and I've set a lazy 1 month deadline to have her back road worthy.
,...still watching and cheering you for the win! :bstar: :bstar: :bstar:
haha many thanks cbr! I'll never give up on this beauty, too much squandered invested in her :thumb:
Forks done(except for cap replacement..). Finally got the sonic .9 springs with 15w oil. I set the oil to 115mm w/ spacer level with top of fork.

The gf came and pulled me out of the shop before I started swapping everything over to the 89 clip ons. Can't wait to get back down there!!
Managed another day in the shop over the weekend!
I was able to get a handful of things done. Got all my controls swapped over to the 89 clipons. I put my front brake reservoir and lsl levers on, also tucked some cables/wires. Next I installed reload's fender brace, black fender, and pair block off plates. Then got the new coils/wires, battery box, and the taillight installed. Already had the ignition swapped out, so i went ahead and slapped the lock on my tail fairing, and the latch on frame. Everything was going super smooth until the 20 minutes of me trying to install the gas cap upside down
After going upstairs and getting my head right. I jumped back down in the shop for a minute before the gf pulled me to bed. Got the new rear wheel mocked(still needs new hub, sprocket, and rotor installed) and installed my chain guard and airbrush's rear hugger. To my surprise the hugger fit the 140 tire, just needs a little spacing correction to fit the german chain guard. The fit is almost perfect on the brake arm stay, not sure how i want to secure it to the arm though. I'll bolt it to the chain guard, but it'll stay zip tied until i figure out if i want to bolt or band it to the brake arm.
Tossing around the idea of leaving out the stock mudguard. I'm going to be running an integrated taillight w/ no blinkers, would only have to find a place to mount my plate. Just not 100% if the hugger will block enough debris to justify having no mudguard.
Here's the photos[quality best(t2i)->worst(drooooid)]:
Really loving the white/blue combo!!

Already thinking of what to do next time i get down in the shop haha. I think while i have most the bit off, next i'll; grease/lube needed components, and torque everything i can get my hands on.
:thumb: Great stuff here steez!
Not much done last night, but did get down there for a minute. Cut the old stock chain off, cleaned sprocket/chain cover area and swing arm. No good photos, but a out of focus; before (http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll129/steezin_and_wheezin/2012-09-17_21-24-18_541.jpg) and after (http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll129/steezin_and_wheezin/2012-09-17_21-36-11_301.jpg). Installed my new 15 front sprocket, and realized I've bought 2 other sprockets(14, and 15) with no shoulders.. Started pulling the gauges apart and realized I've lost 1 of the new rubber dampers i bought
Forgot I haven't posted on my gauge faces- Plan is to use some transparent paper i bought and sent to fordham. I've never been a big fan of lots o matching colors, but figured i'd give it a shot. Plan is to use the transparent paper to show light instead of just slapping some regular paper on top of the stock face. Still working out the fine deets, but here's a teaser;
I'll be getting some colored, and some just like he normally makes. Worst case i just stick with stock, but i think i'll be able to get them to work. Still waiting for them from Fordham so I'll re-box the gauges and move onto the next list item.
Nice job mate!
Preciate it mab!
Didn't get much time on her last night. In the process of parting out a moped project i picked up cheap. Was heading to the shed (http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll129/steezin_and_wheezin/2012-09-19_23-09-54_770_zpsec7f98be.jpg), but as i was walked through the shop i couldn't help myself :D
Got out my plastic razor blades (https://www.treatland.tv/permatex-safe-scraper-p/permatex-safe-scraper.htm)(these things are great!) and scraped off the dummy stickers on the frame. Had already done the tank earlier. It's a subtle change, but i think it looks 10x better.

I think this is how the bike looks best. no seat, no tail fairing. just looks like a beast with bulky shoulders. especially since I currently have non-stickered glaring white tail plastics on right now.
Not much done.. Got my lunchbox, sv throttle tube, and progrips (http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll129/steezin_and_wheezin/IMG_3907_zps6b0f6304.jpg). I went ahead and slapped the gauges back together, and installed the bits up front.

Just about 1/2 way through my stoner speed 1 month schedule. Right on track with no stress and only fun wrenching so far :thumb:
oohh :icon_eek: feeling the pressure of my bonjangling building up!! haha not much else done, been on the moped projects. I put the gimbel passenger pegs, going to work much better than stock location.. And i think they look pretty wicked:
Going to be spending some time on her this week and maybe a bit next weekend. Next wednesday is 1 month so i've got some work to do!
Where did you get the controls and mounting plate or were these custom fab? I have been looking everywhere for replacement pegs, but nothing has caught my eye until these! Looks like aluminum, correct?
They are by Gimbel. The same that I use on Junior and Phenix.

This one is Raask from Sweden. I prefer Gimbel over Raask. Raask is not quite as far back as Gimbel for peg position. Presently I am not using Raask.

haha thanks for the reply and blowing up my project thread with yer bike adidas. could ya alteast put a 500 width on those photos?
Yes, the rearsets are Gimbel, and although a bit costly, they are very high quality.
edit: thank you my friend!

I'm the worlds best procrastinator.. Not much else done, been busy with life, regular bs, mopeds, and now the shred season's up and running.
Sometimes I forget about little ol Gabby, then I'll see her in my shop. I'll walk over give her a hug to reassure her she will see the road again next summer. Not sure how much wrenching time I'll get during the winter, but I plan on dedicating some time here and there to her.
I never forget about her needs though, and I'm always looking to get the last few pieces to her puzzle.
Most recent, fork adjuster cap to replace the chewed up caps that are currently on it. (http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll129/steezin_and_wheezin/2012-09-22_16-23-18_477_zps56d39978.jpg)

Ughhhh those rear sets and foot pegs you guys got are so nice looking, how much did you pay for them in US dollars?!?
Thanks mang! I'm dying to try all the new parts on the project, just need to get it road worthy!
The Gimbel rearsets were ~$300 for the riders, and passenger pegs were extra ~$50 i think
Here's Gimbel's ebay auction;
http://www.ebay.com/itm/260738085031
Still $100 cheaper than buying from WHA (http://www.whaccessories.com/GS500Accessories.htm)
Sweet thanks! Ya your gs is looking like its coming together pretty well! I think I will have to hold off on buying those for a while, maybe just substitute some gsxr rear sets.
Things accomplished yesterday; tighten front fender, mounted front wheel, tighten fork brace, install missing tach cushion/gasket, drill chain guard for hugger and mount guard, mount petcock, mount mud guard, swap new sprocket on hub and mount on wheel, mount rear wheel, assemble tail fairing and install, finish mounting solo seat cowl, swap upper triples.

Get to it Steezin...LOL!
I have lots of brake pads if you need them. They fit OEM F models...not sure if they are different cause you said "Nissin"
PM me if you need them.
EDIT: Tell me what shims you need. I"m getting rid of the 3.xx sizes first.

Haha all this is at my half baked pace (http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll129/steezin_and_wheezin/smilin/sifone.gif) Preciate the brake pad offer, I have a handfull of oem style pads as well. I will check the shim case when i get home on lunch for sure!
Are you asking about the chain guard 8.6? That is the german style chain guard. Adidasguy makes a quality gs500 chain guard for a great price though - here's the thread for product/order info; Stainless Steel chain guards (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=58237.0)

OK, no more ramblings from me until I have more progress :-X
Had a good day yesterday wrenching. Started out swapping the oem front caliper back on. Really wanting to get her road worthy asap. I'm going to look into mounting hardware for the nissin caliper w/ sv650 adapter later.
Got the Jardine sized up and mounted as well. Everything went well, except i have some interference on the rear brake pedal. I have probably an inch and a half of travel, which i assume is not nearly enough. I'll look closer at that once I get fluid in the rear brake system to see what my pedal feels like. Also the strap they sent me looks to be made out of scrap metal haha. Thinking of spraying it black when i paint the rest.
Next on the list was the carbs. Damn they had gotten a lot worse that I thought! Had some pretty stubborn varnish on the right carb. Got most of it out, but it will need another round for sure. Rejetted to 147.5/65/20, I'll probably shim the needle once i find the right o-rings. I want to be sure i'm rich enough for my break in period, at least til 500 miles.
I did pull a dumb move and had removed the throttle positioning sensor when i pulled the carbs apart the first time. I should have read the big bold message in the manual that says DO NOT REMOVE THIS TPS UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY!! haha so now I have to get a multi meter and get it right..

A quick time lapse of some of the work;
New battery, oil, and filters will be here tomorrow. Hopefully will be able to start her soon.
Awesome dude!
I have been meaning to ask, what are those head lights and windscreen from? Buell? or are they just the dominator lights? I read thread just couldnt find it, thanks!
They are an aftermarket 5-3/4" dual light setup from Aztec8 (http://www.aztec8.com/catalog/c6_p1.html). A bit pricey, but i wanted something bigger than the tiny looking dominators. Adding the bug screen really pulls the front end together nicely, in my opinion. Light output is really great from them. I may try the diamond cut lens that aztec offers, but that's another pricey upgrade.
My only complaint is the non metric(imperial) hardware :technical:
Wowwwzers those are quite pricey. But they do look very nice and different. I love the windscreen, thats like the main thing I was looking at haha. Is there no way to mount them further down on the forks?
*EDIT*
Actually on second thought, you could turn the mounting ears upside down and that would make for a lower mount. Thats just my preference though, I like everything to be low profile haha.
I dont think you would run into problems either with it hitting the fender when bottoming out.
Sorry just rambling on now and day dreaming. I'll stop now
2012/13 TO DIDNT List
Things left to finish;
-Dial in R6 Shock
-Fork reflectors(rear reflectors?)
-Check Valves
-Figure out nissin brake mounting
-Trim and mount Gimbel chin fairing
-Polish buddha's cover to better match engine color
-Install R&G shark fin
-Repaint stands
-Fenderectomy
-Install adjustable fork caps
Things left to purchase;
---New Horn
---Smoked integrated tail light
---Rim tape
After a much needed prod from Jester, I got some more work done. She is officially running again :woohoo:
Recorded on the gopro without my external mic.. sounds awful on film, but so good in person!
Got quite a bit done, but the To Do list keeps growing! I have to be running, inspected, plated, and broken in by June 29th/30th
List of things done;
- clean petcock and ran new fuel lines
- new chain installed
- adjusted shift linkage, but may shorten a bit more to get the angle on shifter i'm after.
- Lights wired and tightened, still need to check proper height/angle
- Reinstalled TPS sensor- Luckily found an old photo i snapped that showed its original position.
- finished mounting carbs and lunchbox
- found out my horn doesn't work for some reason! This is a small thing, but will keep me from passing inspection..
- removed center stand. With the center stand in the upright position the part you step on is right between my foot peg and shifter..
- ordered new battery but found out they are on backorder. So i'm going to get one online somewhere
- tightened and aligned my rear wheel.
- ordered the morgan car sync tool
- installed a bar end mirror
- flipped my clip on bar clamps. PO had them reversed so my NOS bars wouldn't fit unless i filed a new grooves..
I dropped my friends battery in, motion pro aux tank on the side, and she purred right to life! Smelled a bit funny, and had a bit of smoke, but I figured it was just the brand new jardine's piping/muffler packing. I'll be watching it like a hawk after getting my battery and oil in!
I do have 1 hose i'm not sure what to do with. I've eliminated the PAIR system since this was originally a CA bike. I have 1 hose I believe went to the rear PAIR canister under the battery box, not sure if i should block it or put a filter on it. I'll have to take some photos of it and do some more research later.
More work on her tonight, and all this weekend. I plan to have it inspected, plated, insured and on the road by the end of next week. We'll see how that goes..
fook yes steez
Sounds good. See you on the 29th/30th!
Preeesh CBR! Will hopefully seen you on the 30th Jester. I don't know why, but my confidence is weird on this project.. I'm really stoked on how its coming together, feels good, engine feels strong, but I guess since its been down for so long I'm a bit of a worry wart. I definitely will be putting together a solid tool kit to take with me on the first leg of the GS500 Relay. Just need to ride it around, put some miles on it to get some confidence in my wrenching.
Have managed a couple nights down in the shop, but not a whole lot accomplished. I did get her insured and picked up my new tags (http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll129/steezin_and_wheezin/2013-06-18_13-30-32_717_zpse0787db1.jpg)! Got most of my first round of torquing done. Went through the wiki torque list, then through the manual to get the rest of the essentials. Next moved onto the smaller bits(lights, shield, gimbel rearsets, oil cooler, gauges, mud and chain guard, etc..) Just a few more small hardware and i'll have everything torqued for round #1. I'll probably do 3-4 heat cycles and torque my header bolts, pair plates, and carbs/lunchbox
Going to get this whole weekend on it! Hopefully I'll get to change the thread title from Rebuilding to Riding/Tuning!! Might even toss together an edit if i get some vids recorded
What tail light are you going with?
Looks good!
Thanks mang! Not looking to get too custom crazy on this bike, I leave the cutting and chopping to my mopeds haha.
I'll probably get this (http://www.surfsidemoto.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=SSM&Product_Code=CLRCTL00262IT) smoked integrated tail. Had one on my first GS and really liked the look, and integrated blinkers. According to the site the new version comes with built in resistors and even has factory plugs.
Well some good and bad.. I got my brakes sorted, filled with dot4 fluid, and finally bled. Took me a handful of times to get good pressure in the front brake. I was close to swapping parts for the spares i had in the shop, but finally got pressure. Rear foot brake had just enough clearance to fully lock the rear wheel before hitting the exhaust pipe! So that's good.
After a quick break for lunch I went over the bike again with my torque wrench, and put new cotter pins in the wheels. Next I flushed the tank and put in some new ethanol free gas in and was getting close to my first ride! Flipped the petcock to prime and hit the ignition. Crank, crank, crank, nothing. Sounded like I was out of gas.. DOH. Been a while since I had a tank petcock. Grabbed my screw driver and turned the fuel flow on. Key on, tank chicken on, frame chicken to prime. Hit the starter and vroom started right up. Then the bad; My right foot felt funny looked down and she was dumping gas out of the left carb on my foot. Flipped the frame chicken off prime to reserve and the leaking stopped. With my frame chicken on the Reserve position I attempted to start again. It started to life but then immediately started dumping gas out of what i believe was the vent hose.
I knew the float needle and its assembly felt like they were binding when i had the carbs apart. I was hoping I could get away with it for now. Negative! haha. It might also be my carb/vac lines or a clogged breather line. I did removed the PAIR system from this bike and may have missed something there as well.
Needing the float assembly ASAP, so I've placed an order on Amazon with free shipping for a pair of rebuild kits(seals and float assemblies) also grabbed a couple k&n oil filters
Next I'll be double checking my fuel/vac hose routing, checking oil for gas(most likely will change it while I'm at it.) Going to get my friend to ride his GS over to double check all my hosing against his. Then when my float assembly kits get here I will rebuild the carbs. She needs to be running and reliable by this Saturday..
I read this thread all the time, and just realized I wasn't sub'd!... >:(
I really hope you get it figured out for Saturday. You've made such great progress! Gabby really looks good.
Be proud, and keep goin!
- Bboy
I'll be pissed if we spend several hours on the side of the road Saturday instead of several hours on the road, lol.
Get-r-Running - else I may have to carry the banner myself.
Really appreciate it Bboy! I was starting to really stress as the date closed in. Luckily we have a couple gs'ers around that will be able to meet Jester.
Slack - That's my fear.. Would hate to hold up the whole planned trek with a malfunctioning bike.
Bike only has 127 miles on the clock, and my floats were shipped out from TX yesterday. Just guessing, but I say the parts will be in Friday. Which means finishing, hoping it runs well, risk riding in WV w/o proper time to break engine and tires in, double check all torque settings, and all that good jazz. Hoping they come in tomorrow, which will leave friday to test/tune.
All in all though, this has spurred me onto actually making some progress on the project. I too think she's come out looking really sharp. After the chin fairing and paint it will be a dream come true.
If i don't make it this weekend, hopefully I will be able to touch the baton maybe on its way north or heading back south.
And she's road worthy!! Got to take my first ride outside the neighborhood today. Such a great feeling :woohoo:
Yesterday I got the new float needle assemblies installed and it solved my gas overflow problem! Took it around the neighborhood last night and it ran ok, but needed some more air in the tires for sure.
Got up this morning and put some air in the tires. Pulled out my new morgan pro carb sync, and got the carbs synced up. It was such a change in the sound of the idle once synced up. I still have a slight backfire in the left carb though.
Took it on a 20 mile ride today and its really feeling great. Still needs a bit more tuning though, I'm going to change the oil tonight.
Enough ramblings its time for some photos!!

Haha classic photo per usual cbr!! thank ya thank ya :thumb:
Rains holding off today so i took her to get inspected. Got shut down at the first shop due to no blinkers. VA law states that if you have blinkers they must function, but if there are no blinkers present hand signals are to be used. Dude was in a real monday mood, and wasn't having it.. He did make a valid point that if blinkers were installed from the manufacturer they must be present to pass inspection. Luckily they didn't take my info first so i didn't have to deal with a rejection sticker!
Called another shop and asked, "what if my bike doesn't have blinkers" he checked with the expert and said it would be OK. I didn't hesitate and took it straight down there. Half hour later Gabby is fully street legal!! Now I won't be worried about riding her around :woohoo:
Going to ride a bit more tonight and get attempt a couple photo challenges. Loving every minute out there!!
Hey Steezin - I'm in Lynchburg (couple of hours from you) and just finished a somewhat similar project (getting non-running GS back on the road). Of course, as soon as I finish my To-Do list, this storm front moves in and brings several days of rain, so I haven't gotten to ride it much since the repairs.
Here's what I'm thinking. You load up half of the tools, I'll load up the other half. We'll give the bikes a thorough test drive and be prepared for when one/both of us have any issues, lol.
Here's what I'm working with...
EDIT: Removed oversized pics.
Got those same Pro Grips pretty comfortable actually!
Looks good Drastik, stoked to hear you're finishing her up. You should make a project thread too, we love reading other members wrenching adventures! If you don't mind, could you edit your post and set a width to your photos so they are overpowering my project thread? If the first image bracket put this info in and it makes it so you can click and enlarge the photos. like this; [img width=500] 'Preciate it!
Don't think i'll be riding her too far away from home until I have jetting 100% sorted. Still have a few kinks to work out, but should be good after some needle shimming. Once that's sorted I plan on riding as much as possible to see how many miles I can get out of the bt003 tires i'm running. We'll should definitely meet up and cruise around sometime. My gma is up in lynchburg, so i'll be up that way for sure
I hear ya on the grips Snake! Its nice having good grips, might have to change the 30 year old ones on my shredped to some nice gel grips. They are too cheap and comfy to not pick up a set or 2!
My apologies. The pics were directly uploaded from my PC, so I couldn't edit them. I removed them so they won't continue to bog down your thread. Keep up the progress!
No worries mang, thanks again! I always like to hear other Twinner's story, but also like a nice clean project thread haha
Definitely start you a project thread and keep us posted on the updates!! I'm hoping the rain holds sometime this weekend. I'll be riding this thing every chance i get once it clears up
Well after a hell of a lot of rain(heard if it doesn't rain anymore until November we'd still be over our average rain fall ammount) I finally pulled the tank off to give shimming my needles a go. I knew with the needles in stock position that was my likely culprit of the 1/2 throttle surging.
I didn't have any washers around the shop and was too lazy for the hardware store. So I found a couple orings that were suitable. My plan was to start with 2 washers=1mm shim to the needle(saw somewhere that noted the washers to be .5mm thick) Oring was just under .9mm, perfect. Close enough to tell me if it would solve my 1/2 throttle surging. Popped the tank off shimmed the needles. Left the mixture screws set to 2.5 turns out. Everything was going so smooth. Backed the bike out of the shop, walked back in to grab a helmet and CCCRUNCH. I stepped on what i thought was a massive bug, turned out of be one of my slide spring :icon_eek:
That was the end of that night..
Ordered some springs from adidas and a few other bits i needed from ronayers(will be using them instead of bikebandit from now on! thanks to whoever mentioned it on the east coast parts site thread) went back to my mopeds while i was waiting for the parts to arrive.
Forgot to cover the gs and the ebc rotor surface rusted over again >:( I'll be going back to a nice oem rotor i've been saving.
Got the springs and other parts on Wednesday. Dropped the missing slide spring and she started up great! It was sprinkling outside again, but I had to take it on a test ride. After a few laps around the block I was soaked, but 1/2 throttle response was night and day better!
Yesterday I got a bit longer ride in, and I'm so stoked on the bike!!! Before i was just glad to have it together, but then the 1/2 throttle surge was just ruining the ride. Couldn't take a smooth turn w/o it buckin. Now she just gliiiides around. Sonic springs, r6 shock, and bt-003 tires are feeling superb. Wearing my chicken strip out now, and still need to dial in the r6 shock.
I'll be getting a few washers and will reshim the needles to get in 100% tuned up. ENOUGH of my ramblings, MORE photos!
Home from her commute ready for a longer ride

After clicking over my first 500 miles, I'll have to say- I am really enjoying myself out there!!!
Got to ride yesterday with the owner of my first GS. We rode out to test my new pistol at the range, then cruised the back roads home. Haven't got to ride with anyone through the twisties much so that was a blast for sure.
Suspension feels great, still need to dial in the R6 shock though. BT003 tires are feeling superb, really felt at home yesterday in the turns. Even though I've put mostly straight line miles on them, the soft rubber isn't showing a flat spot out as quick as i thought they would. I probably won't buy another set of the 003's for the street, but might pick up a set to keep around in case i make it to the track.
Snapped a quick photo of the tire wear yesterday

I have my carb needles shimmed up .9mm right now, but I think i may shim them up to a full 1mm as i still have a tiny bit of lag on cruising 6th gear ~1/4 throttle.
i just come here for the pictures :whisper:
First day back on two wheel bump!
Didn't get much done over the winter.. I've clocked 30 days so far shredding in WV so tool time has been low. Biggest thing I did was moved a set of base cabinets into my other parts room to give Gabby a permanent spot in the shop. Did a couple small things on her as well; regeared from 15 back to stock 16 on front sprocket, fixed tach, fixed low beam, and started trimming the chin fairing to fit cool lines and exhaust.
All my camera equipment is up in WV, so excuse the low qual cellies;
The shop during the winter(an occasional ped project trickles in..);
Just a bit more trimming and the Gimbel chin will be ready to go on. Thinking of attempting a Tombstones81 quality rattle can job to help it match to bike until full paint
(http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll129/steezin_and_wheezin/steezin_and_wheezin003/d28e023b-943e-4f0c-b2e1-bc6f693a2672_zps87df6d58.jpg)
Fixed my low beams, but drained my battery in the process. Let her sit over the winter and the clutch started stickin.. So I finally ordered a trickle charger. With a charged battery and a couple turns over she roared to life! Warmed up and clutch started cooperating again. Took it for a test ride last night and finally got her on the road today for first the daily commute of the season!

gotta love staring @piles of parts & seeing the end in sight Eh?
It really is a great feeling, took me long enough though!! I got to take a chilly mountain pass run last night after work, such a great feeling :woohoo:
Snowing this morning so I left her in the shop until lunch. Can't wait to finish up a few more small things and then ride the tar off those wheels!
Just some ramblings;
Been fighting a backfire through my left carb. See this thread (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=66633.msg803269#msg803269) for better explanation. Tried going from 2.5 turns to 3 turns out on the mixer screws. Nothing.. So I gave up until I can get more shop time to pop the carb, inspect, and do another carb sync.
Then read a thread a while back where the owner saw better fuel economy with lower octane level. My gs has usually averaged 45-55mpg depending on style riding. I figured I'd give the lower octane theory a shot. With only a handful of miles I can't say anything on fuel economy, BUT the bike seams to be idling better and I haven't heard any backfires through the carb yet.
I'll be taking some longer treks this summer so I plan to put her under the microscope and make sure she's running healthy. I did buy a couple little gadgets that will make my longer rides more enjoyable. Got a CrampBuster (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GZPH2U/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and a throttle assist/cruise control (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0055QOKC8/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1).
Have another look at your cam timing.
We have found sometimes it can be off by 1 tooth. Things look right, but when the tensioner is tight and the engine rotates a few times, the cams are actually backwards by 1 tooth.
We then rotate the cams forward 1 tooth and all is perfect.
The symptoms were some backfiring through the carbs and hanging idle when the motor gets hot.
You see, normally the cam chain is not tight when you insert and check the cams. After everything gets tight, most of the slack gets taken up on the back side thus rotating the cams backwards a little, ending up 1 tooth off.
Whoa.. missed this reply by the main man himself
Pat, you were such an amazing individual. Never wavering from what made you happy. One of your characteristics I want to adopt is your unconditional willingness to help others. Even my noobish questions didn't phase you. All verbal language is weak in the attempt to describe the impact you had on all of us, and many others. So I will rev my GS, to celebrate yer life and the joy of having the chance to get to know you through these parallel twins. May you smile down on all the friends and family. We will have a group ride again one day my friend!!
Gabby got new fuel lines over the weekend. Decided to pull and clean the lunchbox filter as well. Gave the slides a test push.. my right slide went maybe 2/3's and then hit a stop on something. Pulled the carb top and the needle plug had come unseated and wasn't holding the needle down firmly. Fixed that, both slides fully functional now. Cleaned and relubed my lunchbox filter. She started right up and sounded much more healthy. Only 1 or 2 burps/backfire through the carb all weekend. Didn't do another carb sync, but will next when I swap the oil/filter again.
Rode her for about 5 hours over the weekend. Rode with my friend back to his place in Lewisburg WV, then back to my home. Had a great ride up with him(he's riding his new Yama Bolt), through some new back road's I've never ridden. Then a nice solo ride home through the regular back roads we drive every weekend to our ski resort. I did ride with an old honda sport(I think it was an old honda cx turbo) for about half an hour, before we stopped, chatted for a minute, then split off in different directions. Gabby ran great, the new throttle aids I got are worth their weight in gold!
Was having too much fun riding, here's the only photo I snapped(of course it was for a failed photo challenge);
Ride safe my brother and sisters.
:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:
The damn bike is better than ever!! So she's been running OK, idle hasn't been the best(kept dipping lower after I would adjust the idle screw), also felt chunky on idle/low throttle, lots of pops on decel, and that annoying nasty hiccup/backfire through the carb at idle/low throttle. I still felt that there was something off, wanted to say it felt like the vacuum system was amiss, but I didn't feel like I knew enough to make that guess. Kept reading and digging.
Then yesterday I was starting the engine to warm the oil for a change, since I rarely have my helmet off when starting the bike I was listening for anything out of the norm. I hear a pft pft pft of air perfectly in sync with my idle speed. The sound was very evident right near where my jardine pipe slips together. I immediately thought, "Damn that's a heavy ex leak to hear it that clearly." Searched around and found the noise was actually coming from a hose off my carb. I've looked at too many hose routing diagrams when removing the PAIR system and getting the vac lines hooked up correctly. Grabbed the hose and plugged the end with my finger for shits and giggles. Idle leveled out, and popping immediately ceased! After another handful searches, using old gstwins threads, as well as part fiche diagrams. My conclusion was I had the purge hose from the lower T on carbs hooked up to my vacuum inlet on the frame petcock. Then the vac line that should've been hooked into the petcock vented straight to the atmosphere(not connected to anything)
After finding the correct diagrams it was a quick and easy fix. Swapped the hoses over, turn the fuel back on and test fired. It hiccuped 1(ONE), one single time, then leveled out and hasn't had a SINGLE pop since. Took her for a quick ride to warm up the oil for a change. She ran so so damn good! In every way and in every rev range she was smoother and just felt healthier. Got the oil/filter swapped out and called it a night. Just a few more things before we take our 6 hour trek to the beach for Bike week.
Now with my slides and vac lines fixed, I'm hoping to get more than the measly 43mpg's I was getting so far this summer. No photos, but I'll have some soon with the thousands of bikes at bike week
man that is a nice feeling

No photos, but I'll have some soon with the thousands of bikes at bike week
its our beloved patricks spirit holding the naked twins gremlins at bay. ;)
dude i love those dual lights you got there! only ones ive seen that look good ( to me )
Well the time has come
I enjoy riding them, but I really cut my teeth on buying projects, finding parts, and rebuilding. So I have sold Gabby last night to her new happy owner. He couldn't be more pleased on how she looks and rides. I pushed him in the gstwins direction, but not sure if we'll see him surface here. Didn't even take a good photo before dropping her off.. It has been one of my favorite builds to date and I'll always miss the old girl.
Ride safe my twinners!
ps. Already have my eye on my next build.. Scratched up a local Suzuki GT550 Indy(3 cylinder / 2 smoker). Should have it home and in the shop asap!

Funny, this is the exact route I'm heading(inverted front, mono rear). Not sure how I haven't stumbled onto that build. I'm looking to keep the lines a bit cleaner, that tail just leaves me wanting moar! He nailed my exact thoughts, "with particular attention to the suspension." After riding this gsF and drooling over the gsXrd400 swap on here I really wanted a 2 smoking moto with a focus on modern suspension. Heading to check it out after work friday!
Well the old 2 stroke triples left a lot to be desired in the suspension and brakes department. I had the chance to ride an old h2 which scared the hell out of me..So so fast and sound like nothing else. I hope you do get around to building a nice smoker would be a great build based off your gs, plus your pictures are really second to none. Cheers
Many thanks MARider! The foundation has been stabled. Now to scheme on it while I'm building my Subaru.
This old girl may be coming home to me soon :whisper:
Coolness!

Excellent! :thumb:
That's a damn good looking bike! 8)
Many thank!! Ahh cbr how I've missed belly laughing in my cubical to yer gifs!! Thought of ya when I used this one (http://media2.giphy.com/media/OEdWJ7hTNVW8/giphy.gif) lately when a friend got his subaru running right haha..
So yup! So stoke to have this girl back. I'm not sure if I'll keep her forever. Kind of one of those, "set it free, if it comes back its meant to be". I could stand to resell again and still not break even on my spreadsheet.. I really blew the bank on this one. New this New that, ship this from germany, etc etc.. I sold it for half my investment. Bought it back for half that. So sell it again for double and nearly break even? Or cut my losses and consider the sale a slight recoup? No need to rush my decision, have some time before riding season to mull it over.
So the kid is moving up to a street triple next season and was aiming to resell. The rear hydraulic brake switch went out and failed him on inspection. Got fed up and called ol' Ryan back up. Of course I jumped at the chance to buy her back. He hit me with a fair price, I chewed some more off of it  and we had a deal.
Switch is on order. I'll get her back on the road shortly into the new year. If I do end up keeping her for too long - I WILL do a full engine swap on it. I'm still stuck on two stroke engines/tech, and have been drooling over EdE's GSxRD400 build (http://www.usa2strokers.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=40300). It would be perfect for me. Never a big yama fan, but shew they know the 2 stroke.
I will be pulling the front fender brace and getting a trefoil carved into it in memory of Patrick. He was truly an awesome dude. One of a kind.. It's the only loose end that I regretted not tying up before the sale. RIP mang, you're memory lives on in us forever.
Pressure switch for rear brake is in. I'll get it titled, reinspected and road worthy before the month's out.

Luck has been on my side as I don't need another project right now - I haven't been able to scratch up a single rd350 or 400 project locally. So she'll keep her current engine for the time being.
Bummer, should've triple checked before getting click happy. Hella switch I bought wasn't the correct kind for brake/banjo(too short and no side hole for banjo). While I had it apart I did confirm the switch was bad so that's a plus. Was nice getting to tool on the bike again, but I need a bigger shop. Space is tight with all the current bikes haha. Correct switch ordered and should be here before the week is out
2nd brake switch wrong thread pitch  3rd time's a charm and she's back up and fully functional. Will get it inspected as soon as I brave the cold.
I have a local guy interested in buying it already.. So now I'm really on the fence if I should keep or send her off to another new home.
The four stroke engine really doesn't do anything for me anymore. Been sharpening my skills on the two smokers and their constancy/reliability is improving the more I learn. The dream of building my own GSxRD(rd400 engine swap) is really tantalizing and one of the only pulls for me to keep the bike.
I jinxed myself on that one.. Went to go get her inspected and realized my low beams were out >:( high beams were fully functional so I assumed bulbs.
Pulled the bulbs and replaced with a working pair. OOOPS still no low beams. So after a couple days of head scratching I guessed it was a short somewhere. I did accidentally let the rear brake switch wires cross and ground out on the swingarm once. So I pull the bulbs and started working my way back. Main connector from controls had a toasty connection. Pull the wires cleaned off the contacts and reinstalled. WHOOP WHOOOP working headlights. Swung my leg over and went to get her inspected.

Decided it was a nice day so I took some fresh photos and listed her for sale again. Not going to push the sale too much since I'm enjoying riding and the weather's nice out.

Yah I know, she needs a bath! Hurts a bit to see her so dirty after starting with a spotless bike years ago
Down the road she goes to another very happy first time motorcycle owner! She's taught many new people to ride and loves every minute. Maybe I'll buy it back again, only time will tell
Her last warm up in my driveway for now

I still look for this bike on FB marketplace and craigslist. Hopefully I can buy it back for a 3rd time someday!
That was a spankin looking bike steez!
