Title: I know ATGATT but what do you guys do with all your gear???
Post by: exacto on January 04, 2012, 08:29:56 PM
I know the phrase ATGATT, and i do follow it, but it just seems silly to walk into costco looking like a robot and squeaking all the way through.

Im thinking about getting a backpack or something and keep a pair of normal shoes in there on every ride. Then i can stash my boots, gloves and jacket and look normal with only f%&ked up helmet hair :D

what do you guys do about this?

well, you can always put your gloves inside your helmet.
Then its just a matter of picking a casual jacket and boots :)

Hmm, I go everywhere with my gear. Even church most people there applaud me for ATGATT even to church. My pastor once said I'm pretty sure that God doesn't care that your wearing a leather jacket to church He just wants you there!

Who cares what someone I don't know in a shop thinks about me. Screw them.

In other words, I wear my gear and carry my helmet (with gloves inside).

Yeah plus makes you look buff lol. I wear it anywhere I ride who cares? Not me. If someone says anything tell them to take a real close look at the stitching and bash their head into your elbow amour.

Gloves in helmet, helmet in shopping cart, and I try to pick boots that are protective yet also comfortable to walk in. Not a big fan of squeaky. One day I might get to the point of having luggage that I can lock the helmet in on the bike - have never liked helmet locks that depend on idiots with knives not cutting your strap.

As for what other people think - not a big concern. And never been an issue - just remember to take the helmet OFF before you walk into the bank.

As for the helmet hair, they make these things called combs you can put in your pocket.

I keep a spare pair of shoes at work, which is the main place I ride to. My boots are shorties... they cover the ankle and give foot support but don't cover the shin, so they are easy to walk in. I forget I have them on a lot of times. I think combat boots or similar would also be good for this.

At the mall, I just proudly walk through...other bikers will nodd or smile...others are jealous...remember, you are riding and they are caging...who do you think is cooler??  mind you, I'm not in my "Power Rangers" get up...my riding gear is leather hiking boots, riding jeans, textile jacket (although Joe Rocket isn't ashamed to put their naime ALL OVER IT), helmet & gloves...and don't forget the hearing protection...I say "what?" enough as it is...

In the office, we are pretty casual...unless we are having a client meeting, then I will bring dress shoes and wear my wind pants over my office dress pants...as for the hair...well...I'm beautiful when I roll out of bed... :icon_lol:

No one here cares about my jacket. I have a couple: Icon, Furegan, etc. all white with black detail and they always look good. People seem more scared when wearing all black leather. I like the white. The Furegan has a cool leopard on the back. The scorpion has a cool design and I've been complemented on it.

My shoes are Alpine Stars that look like regular shows so i can wear them everywhere.

Helmet is white HJC flip up. I wear it everywhere. Flip it up and no one seems to care. In fact, it starts a lots of conversations from strangers about bikes! Pretty cool and fun to talk bikes. Sometimes I leave the helmet on the bike, carry it or set in the shopping basket.

I think a lot has to do with the local mentality about bikes. Also what style you're wearing. Wear hells angels style - yea, people can freak. Wear something stylish and non-black, different attitude. Chaps: always seems weird. Rain gear: that's just fine - especially in Seattle (rain and lots of fishermen with rain gear)

People think this is a cool jacket - me too!

If you're wondering, those are adidas jeans. My only non-adidas outer wear is bike gear. Underwear also adidas (Sorry, TMI)

I think you would look more silly walking around costco with a backpack big enough to hold your boots, gloves, and jacket. I work at a school and I roll up and walk right in carrying my helmet and sure people stare but who cares. My boss is a big harley guy so he gives me crap if I'm not riding my bike. Granted I always wear a backpack style laptop bag and I generally keep a thin jacket or flannel shirt with me since they keep the place pretty cold and I don't feel the need to wear and armored jacket all day.

I wear the boots and the jacket.  Gloves and pants go into the saddle bags, Helmet goes on the helmet holder under the seat.

When I used to commute on my bike I ran a cable lock through the arm of my jacket and leg of my overpants and then locked them to the bike. THen I would put my gloves in my helmet on the helmet lock and cover the entire thing with a bike cover so that nobody would mess with my stuff. I picked normal leather boots that offered decent foot and ankle protection.

Now if I'm going somewhere that I need to be in "normal" clothes for a long period of time I take my dual sport and stuff everything into the hard cases (much easier/quicker).

I have a thick bicycle cable wrapped around my grab bar that I lock my helmet on most sometimes. It's long enough that I can run through my jacket if need be. My boots don't draw any attention and are all day comfortable.

Generally I just wear it everywhere. I was just looking through car yards this morning (updating the main family car) and just rode up hoped off and walked in. Got service instantly without any strange looks. I find people tend to respect a bike rider that wears everything rather than those that wear only the cool looking pieces or the biker getup. Mine is also all black get up (helmet and visor too) so it does make me look a lot cooler than I am really.
I've got a rack on the bike with a 85 litre pack that goes on that. Carries my work clothes and I've shoes I leave at work under my desk. Get changed when I get to work, everything fits in the bag or my locker. Mood pending. My work is on a base so parking is pretty secure.

Red summer gloves - real cold during the winter may I add... I haven't been able to buy pants yet. but I normally wear jeans. also boots I wear a pair of old combat boots. btw @adidasguy I Dig the jacket, Wish Mine looked that good. But its hard to find motorcycle jackets for SKINNY TALL people! :(

I have this too. Excellent for running through the sleeve of my jacket and the chin bar on my helmet. It also coils up small enough to carry in my jacket pocket.

In case you aren't aware, the GS has a hook on each side of the frame under the seat to hook your helmet D-ring on.  With the seat locked on the helmet is secure.  I grew up on Hondas and had no idea those hooks were there for the first year I owned a Suzuki

Yeh, I just don't like the idea of leaving my $500 helmet on those hooks. If someone really wanted to I bet they could yank that seat up. To me the cable seems more of a deterrent.

Yup, I'm aware...they are pretty tight to get on there...I didn't like the pressure put on the strap when it was on there...but I sold my GS and have a new baby now...

This was taken four days after I bought it...I had just put the screen on...the MT-01 doesn't have the hooks, or anything else to tie things to...so the cable idea is awesome to me...

I don't take the chance of someone maybe doing something to my stuff, so take it with me. That way, I don't need a deterrent.  :thumb:

Yep, it's a little odd to think that half my gear is worth more than my bike.  Where I go or the time of day dictates if I leave my gear on my bike.  If I'm parking in a questionable area, I wear the gear and give delightfully feminine smiles to anybody who stares.  If I'm not concerned, I'll lock my helmet on my bike.

BaltimoreGS used to use a combination cable lock to string through his jacket and grab bar.  It was really convenient... until it wouldn't open one day.  Luckily, we were at a Volunteer Fire Company bbq and they snipped it (rather too easily) for him.  I bought one anyway, but it has a key, hopefully it won't fail me!

I remember on my Ps course/test/thingy the instructor said remember when you get into a road rage incident don't ever take your helmet off for three reasons.
1) They can't identify you
2) People try to hit you in the head will get only helmet
3) Its great to head butt people with, specially if the visor is up.

But also, going past cars, or cars going past you - hubba hubba some girls have no idea how revealing they are to those who can see in (or they do, and do it anyway).

PLUS PLUS, it's menacing to look at someone with an all dark visor and they cannot see you and they think you're a badass biker cause you're on a bike.

AND PLUS PLUS PLUS.... this happens (happens to me all the time  ;)) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlitRhQJpvA

I wish I could look at my hot girlfriend right behind me while riding. But I can't. Maybe one day I will regret saying this and say instead "I'm glad I can't look at my wife while riding/Hear her." or not.. LOL

but back on topic, I have a dark visor you can't see me in either. and pull up to a car with a bunch of females carpooling, and I watch every one of them stare at me. and they think I'm looking at the light.. :D I can almost hear the drips from their mouths. :D

Edit, again: Oh and its good for when guys stare at your girlfriend/wifes for some of you. and you pull up right next to them, look at them in the eyes. And they scurry away in their little rusty cages. cause the eyes are the strongest things you got on your body to detour guys away from your women. Now a 45.. that's different, can't carry one of those yet! :D

Of all the bikes I've owned, the GS was the only one that had hooks, but of course I had to chop that subframe up for a tail swap, so I've never owned a bike that still had them. I usually just make some. Most of my helmets have the D-rings replaced with a little buckle, so I just get an extra buckle and put it on a strap that's mounted under the seat. Then when I put the seat down there's no way to unhook it. I have a cable that I use for my current bike, as the seat bolts on and I'm not looking to mess with that every time.

In general though, this is one of the reasons to pick good gear. Make sure your riding boots are comfortable and don't look like something you'd wear to the moon, you can get decent jackets that look like something a normal human might wear. I bought a pair of textile riding pants but I really want to get a pair of those jeans that are made with kevlar and pads for normal daily use. I usually just stick my gloves in my helmet when I lock it, but they're old and my feelings wouldn't be that hurt if they were stolen. A backpack is another easy answer, I usually have one if I'm going into a store anyway. The one I have has a big flap on the back so after I toss my gloves in the back, I fold my jacket in half and strap it on under the flap, then the only thing I'm left with are my riding boots. I'd really like a pair of those newer riding shoes that look more like serious hi-tops, but I'm hesitant to give up the protection of full length boots, although i did pick up a pair of simple looking and comfortable waterproof boots from cyclegear for $40, so I wear those if I know I'm gonna be walking.

Price vs theft is definitely something to factor in when you're shopping for gear. The general rule, is that once a helmet is snell/dot approved, they don't get too much safer from impact than that. there are benefits, lighter weight, better visor setup, better vents, better wind noise reduction. All of those things can technically make your helmet safer because it causes less distractions so you're less likely to crash, but in regards to your head hitting the pavement, it's up for debate as to whether a $600 Arai is really safer than a $100 HJC. With that in mind, if you're worried about a helmet getting stolen when you go into a restaurant, maybe buy a 2nd $100 helmet, spray paint it flat black to deter theft, and just don't worry about it. Keep your nice helmet for when you go on long saturday morning rides, and use the cheap one when you go to the store. I live in the city so I have a cheap MX helmet that I wouldn't ever use on a real ride, but I'll take it if I'm running to the post office or a store, and that way if I came outside and found it missing I'd say "what a jerk!" but then go on with my day like normal.

The other principle is that until you have nicer gear, you don't know what you're missing. I have an old Arai, so I happen to know that sliding my head inside of it is like sticking my head through some clouds and out the other side into heaven, but until I had that helmet, I never gave my cheap HJCs a second thought. If you're worried about gear theft, and haven't yet spoiled yourself on nice gear... don't, it'll only give you something more to worry about. I've replaced plenty of really nice things in my life with older/cheaper versions for 1/3rd the price so I could spend me time enjoying them instead of worrying about them, and I couldn't have been happier.

I've always found the lowcut jeans with visible thong, tight fitting tank and plaited hair from beneath the helmet also gives away whether you're female or not. When I wear the above they all can tell I am NOT female  :icon_mrgreen:

PS: I did see a girl wearing that very thing once. No protection whatsoever, but no guessing if it was female or not.

And this is also a give away...

aaah man, being completely honest, as nice as the skirt is, the biggest reason that girl is super hot is because she's riding an old slingshot gsxr750 with an 04-05 tail swap. the only thing she could do to make that any better would be to ditch the front fairing and make a streetfighter out of it.

As for gear... just acquired a new perforated leather jacket from Ricondi (http://www.ricondi.com.au/) - he removed the cheap armor and put in the armor from his racing suits. So glad it was perforated cause its maiden ride was like 35c (95f). Other riders were suffering in their leathers, I was doing okay.

Haha, I'm still not sure, that's an awesome bike. Maybe if the girl had a body. I'm not looking to meet the beer goggles girl in the yellow dress, but I'm not too into anorexic girls either. If she wasn't on the bike I doubt I'd even give her a 2nd look.

Lol, what does this test prove? I saw the sockets immediately and wondered why they were sideways and then thought maybe it was from a foreign country. Then...I thought maybe it was one of those trick images where you're supposed to see a subtle difference between the two.

Seriously...I just don't like porn. I'd rather look at pictures of cars or motorcycles or learn how something works than be "lubing my chain" to a picture or video of some chick I don't even know. ;)

Just me though! To each their own! ;)

Make sure to keep your chain properly lubed and adjusted, or it looses its tension, rusts, and may hurt your gears.

@ Kijona. It's a joke man.

@ Mad. Nothing Tard Farm worthy in this thread. It's still all safe for work.

The way I figure, if carrying gear with me is such a hassle, I'll take the bloody car instead. It's not like I buy two arms full of stuff when I go to the shops with my bike.

+1. I have 3 pairs of them. The Draggin ones seem to be the most comfy and best quality as they have padding in them as well that isn't even noticeable. And motorcycle boots don't have to look like you walked straight off Laguna Seca track.

I have come off with a pair at around 30kms
(I know not that fast), lowsided in a bend. Knee went down and slid with the bike. Jeans didnt even wear through but I had fabric burn on my knee. Leather will probably slide better but unless you are wearing knee sliders or the like I reckon it is still gonna be the same result.

Here is a vid of them testing the jeans out - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDPcFGV9vPg

Get under armour, they're not for impact protection...but you won't need skin grafts...and won't look like a reject from POWER RANGERS...looks good on the bike, but walking into work or through the mall...no thanks

Gloves and jacket either go in the topbox if it's on the bike, or else locked to the bike or I carry them, depending on where I am etc.
Boots, jacket and pants I just wear wherever I am.

Nods and smiles from other riders - cagers just step out of the way or ignore me.
Much like riding on the road really.

knee and hip armor are a good add in with kevlar jeans.

I prefer to wear the armor seperate. For hips, these are nice. http://stores.sportbiketrackgear.com/Detail.bok?no=5935

I'm thinking about some new knee pads for spring,   http://stores.sportbiketrackgear.com/Detail.bok?no=13049

Instead of kevlar, I have preference for these... http://www.canyonchasers.net/reviews/clothing/carhartt.php

I love the style of these ones... http://stores.sportbiketrackgear.com/Detail.bok?no=13049

I have a pair of riding pants but I've really been wanting to find some knee pads to put on under my jeans when that's what I'm wearing. There's a lot of knee pads out there that are longer to cover some of your shin but I think they'd conflict with full length boots, plus having the straps behind your knee would tear at your skin. Those ones look really nice though.

The other benefit to those shorts with pads, is that they're comfortable for long rides anyway. When I go out for long rides sometimes I put on a pair of padded bicycle shorts and it helps a LOT.

The shops are an easy one, I just walk in the door in whatever gear I was wearing, no need to change.  I've got no issue doing my shopping in leathers, if anything it tends to start conversations with other riders.  I don't wear a 1 piece though, so I've still got pockets for wallet, keys, phone and shrapnel.

Riding to work's another issue, because I have to get changed into work uniform, which means I've got to ditch the riding pants and boots.  We usually don't have anywhere to change on site, or anywhere to leave our stuff so it's all got to be carried with me.

Wow. the taichi knee guards mentiond by redhawk look really nice!
http://stores.sportbiketrackgear.com/Detail.bok?no=13049
Solid, AND comfy, looks like.

As far as work goes.. I was lucky enough to be gifted with a 2nd hand track suit... which turned out to be a bit loose on me... which made it perfect for wearing light business casual clothes underneath :)
So I get into work, unzip the suit, and put in a mini-closet they provide us. I also keep a change of shoes there. Although the Shift "street shoes" are wearable all day, I figure I should keep them aired out as much as possible.

Plus at some point, I plan to get full on track boots.  While the shoes protected me from having my ankle worn down, they did NOT protect me from some "soft injuries" I got with an Off @ around 35mph. :(  my achillies tendon still hasnt healed fully after 3 months. So I'll be buying more rigid boots when I have the money to spare.

I wear my battle gear everywhere.

Proudly too.

Once, in walmart, a child hid behind his mother and started crying and pointing.

Wasn't wearing the helmet either, the armor just scared him.
