Title: What do you think it's worth?
Post by: cstilt on January 06, 2012, 04:54:15 PM
Well folks, I'm thinking of getting rid of my bike.  I don't ride her much these days and my family size is possibly going to change as well. So I believe her days are numbered.  What do you think a fair asking price is?  Before you venture a guess, I have to give you all the details.

It's a 2005 GS500F that I laid down.
I've replaced the tank, rims, tires, gauges, rear fairings and front end.
Milage is 10,066
Motor and transmission are good
The gauges are Acewell 3962 digital gauges
Pirelli sport demon tires stock size
Dominator headlight with a small flyscreen
Katana Front End installed by Bhudda

I think the frame may be a bit tweaked because at around 45mph I do get a bit of vibration. It's not bad if you have a good hold of the bars, but you'll quickly grab them if you let go.  I've never checked to measure if it was the frame or something else causing the vibration.  Here are the photos for you to judge how it looks. I think I included about all the info I could.  If there's anything else I need to include, just ask.

Excellent condition "Blue Book" is $2300 with the fairing.  Maybe $1500 without the "vibration".    Unfortunately, you won't get your money out of the Acewell or Katana FE (unless you sell it to someone who knows how much better it is than stock).  Might be worth it to you if you spend the $70 or so for a replacement seat from Pinwall on eBay.  Exhaust too.  If you can make it look like it hasn't been down you might find someone who will fall in love with it!

I'll give you a packet of chips and two packets of gum for it.

looks great, but I'll probably agree with the $1500 because of the frame, the vibration, and that bent handlebar. I feel like it's more likely your vibrating is something to do with the front end than the frame. Make sure the bearings at the top triple aren't too tight/loose, or that they don't just need replaced. It might be a simpler fix than you think, and fixing it first might get your an extra $1000 out of the sale.

Thanks for all the info guys.  I agree with the maybe 1500 also, I knew I'd get nowhere near KBB for it.
tt_four, I'll have to do like you said and check the top triple.  I'm not getting my hopes up though.  It had a vibration before before Buddha put the FE on it. It's just less now...

You wouldn't know the torque specs on the top triple right off would you?

I'm sure someone here knows, but in general when there's no weight on the front end(centerstand and front wheel off the ground) just make sure there's no play, which would mean it's too loose, and no resistance/binding/notching, which would mean it's too tight or your bearings are shot. It's easier to feel if the front wheel is removed  because you're not gonna be feeling the weight of the wehel as you're rotating it.

You should also check around the frame to see if you can find any cracks or bumps in the paint, pretty much your only sign of a bent frame when it's painted. You're sure you back wheel is aligned too? I'm not sure if that would cause vibration or not, but it's definitely worth checking.

I had an terrible vibration too around that speed. I adjusted the rear wheel alignment a little bit, and it went away.

Thanks for the advice guys.  There is a dent in the frame under the motor, so that may be the source of some of the problem.  I will make sure the rear wheel is adjusted correctly too.  I'm thinking it'd be more accurate measuring with a tape measure instead of trusting the marks from the factory.

Your mirrors are on backwards.

Just thought I'd let you know. :D

Are you sure?  I always thought the shiny side should be facing you.  It helps in seeing what's behind you.

Lol, that's not what I meant. It was just a joke, I always see people with theirs facing downwards (hanging below the bar). You'd switch L->R to achieve it.

Machinations aside, this looks like a pretty nice bike. Personally, I would pay about 1200 for it given its issues and the fact that it has been wrecked.

Good luck!  :thumb:

Lol. I figured that's what you meant. I was just in a bit of a smart azz mood when I replied. I tried the down facing first. I think it looks better down, but my arms block my view like that.

At work today I priced it to a coworker for 1000. Hopefully they'll take it.  I told her exactly what was going on with it.  My stupid honesty won't let me lie lol
