Hi everyone. I am new to the forum and i recently bought a 1995 gs500. I have already clean the carbs and got in running fairly well. I still have to change the o-rings on top of the carbs as they are cracked.
My problem is that it will only run when the peacock is in the PRI position which allows fuel to always flow. When i switch it to the ON position it wants to die after a few mins like its starving for fuel? What could be the problem here? I figured it was not good to have it in the PRI position all the time.
I also am wondering if i have to replace my fork seals if it is leaking slightly? i will post a picture up later.
Thanks for any and all help! :D :icon_mrgreen:
Welcome - where are you located? (You can add that to your profile - helps when looking for parts so people know where you are).
Petcock: probably the vacuum line is off. There is a line from the left carb to it that turns on the fuel.
If forks leaking, you should replace the seals. The oil can get on your front brake rotor - that's not fun to suddenly have no front brake. If slightly, not urgent but plan on doing it.
No peacock jokes??? You are a better man than me Adidas ;)

New member - might not be aware of my weird humor.
I could talk about drinks: male rooster feathers from the rear end (aka chicken-tail)
Or that I never knew that thing was a pee pee. I always thought it was called a "self" because mom always said "Stop plating with your SELF"
A pea-chicken - could that be a very small one? If you like it, put a leash on it, take it out for a walk and show off your pet-chicken.
How's that? (http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb442/adidasguy/Videos/bananafk.gif)
Good info mine is the exact same way. Only thing on the bike that doesn't work perfectly although you might not guess that by looking at it.
Thanks for the replys guy! and Im located in Southern New Jersey. Ill add that to my info later. I know what tube you are talking about and it connected to from my left carb to the peacock. There could be a leak in the hose but it looks good otherwise. Could it be a problem with the peacock itself?

heres a pic of the fork leak. If im going to replace the seals i mine as well take the whole thing apart to see if anything else needs replacing :icon_mrgreen:
Hey Alex, welcome to the forum. The part that switches fuel is called a "petcock", not peacock. You should go ahead and replace that fork seal. It's a messy job but not too hard on a GS, you'll just need basic hand tools and a few homemade tools. Search the forum for details. A nice winter project for a Jersey boy :thumb:

This petcock issue has been mentioned several times before, but I found it helpful to learn that on some older bikes, the fuel lines have gotten switched around so the PRI setting is actually the ON setting. Also, some folks have mentioned that they get no response fuel-wise when they've run dry and switched to RES. Search the forum history for these. Welcome. Ride safe.

LOL sorry about that and thanks for letting me know so i dont look like a total idiot anymore :thumb: Im willing to do the forks i just have to wait till i have time to do so :icon_mrgreen:
That photo is not a leak - that's a gusher! Could there be any fork oil left in there?
Seals (and sometimes a walrus) are all that goes wrong with forks unless they get bent, scratched or rusty.
Okay ill make sure to get on that then! and aside from the leak the forks are in really good shape.
I checked how my fuel lines were run and they are run just as the repair manual shows them. I attempted to take the fuel chicken apart but it didnt want to open up after the screws were removed. And not wanting to break it i just left it alone. Once i put it back on the bike i can get the bike to run perfectly well in PRI and RES but not ON. WTF lol. Is there anything wrong with just running it in those two settings? :dunno_black:
Thanks for all the help :icon_mrgreen:
Check to be sure the fuel valve under the tank is fully on. Slot up & down is on. Sideways is off.
Check your fuel lines: one might be pinched.
Do you have gas in the tank? Fill it up! Maybe that's why ON doesn't work (really - silly as it sounds - it has been posted here before - then a fill up cured it. Reserve is about 1 gallon so you may think you have enough gas.)
That last reason could be it! Im kinda a noob to motorcycles and dont really understand the concept of a reserve tank. I dont have that much fuel in the tank so that could be the reason! Thanks.
Another quick question... Im replacing the small o-rings on top of the carbs. If i can find an o-ring at my local hardware store that is around the same size can i use them? or are they very specific?
lots of helpful people on this forum!! :D :icon_mrgreen:
(http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb442/adidasguy/Videos/tiphat.gif) You're welcome.
Reserve is just a shorter tube in the tank. Tall one is main. When fuel gets low (about 1 gallon left) - it ain't gettin' any 'cause its above the fuel level. So you switch to reserve, which is a shorter outlet that will nearly drain the tank. There really is no separate "reserve tank" other than a bottle of fuel in your back pack.
PS: The o-rings on the top of the carbs do not get fuel on them, so any good ones should do. Try for chemical resistant ones.
Thanks for explaining :thumb:
I picked up some o-rings

the o-ring on top is the original and the bottom one is the new one. The new ones fit perfectly and i just installed them.
