Title: Non GS winter motorcycle projects??
Post by: BaltimoreGS on January 12, 2012, 04:41:49 PM
While snapping some engine pictures for Tombstone today I took a few of my winter time vampire hanging out at the shop.  It is a 500 twin but not a GS   ;)  One of those deals I just couldn't pass up (but probably should have).  It's a 1984 Shadow that has been in storage for the last 14 years.  It has surface rust and the carbs are frozen but everything is there and it had a clean title.  I have an '83 Shadow 500 and an '84 Ascot 500 so if nothing else it is a good parts bike.  So what are you working on??

-Jessie

Baltimore, you wouldn't happen to need a plastic side cover for the Ascot would you? For some odd reason I have one in the garage.

Working on the GR (as always):

Rebuilding the top end of this for a co-worker:

And trying to get this CB125 running for a friends wife to learn on in the spring:

I had to rebuild the motor for my yz426. I've never rebuilt a motor aside from a 2 stroke moped motor, so I assumed it would take longer than it did. I've slacked off a bit and stretched it out for a while, but really I've spent 3 nights on it, one to pull it apart, one to try to put the crankcase back together while wondering why the transmission wouldn't shift right when I tightened the shift segment back on, and then a 3rd to actually bolt everything back together. I was pretty surprised how simple the inside of a modern 4stroke engine could be.

pulled top end:

behind right side engine cover:

removed clutch:

Flywheel removed, you can see the sheared off threads, which are the reason for the rebuild:

crankcase split:

trashed piston out:

Didn't really take many reassembly pictures as it would be the same as looking at those in reverse, but here it is back together. Just needs the flywheel and side covers bolted back on:

Sucks it needed rebuilt in the first place, but I'm happy to know what actually goes on with everything inside my engine. It has the close range YZ transmission in it, someday I'd love to pull it apart and replace that with a WR426(wide ratio) transmission since I ride it on the street. I'd love to get a little more range out of the engine,  but I'll just be happy to get out on the road again. All I really need now is the auto-decomp camshaft so I can get rid of that stupid lever on the handlebar.

They stick a set of road tyres on these over here in Australia and the Australia Post use them to deliver mail on em. Hence why we call them "Postie bikes" over here. Some guy actually retro fits them out to look like old bikes

I used to have one of those as a winter project a couple years ago. Heather has been really into them for a long time. It was an ok project, but honestly I'd much rather have something like a CB125

CB125??  Awesome!!  I rarely see them around anymore.  I dig small displacement bikes.  I'd love to have one of those but everyone seems to want too much money for them around here.  A Bandit 400 is on the "want to own" list too but they are a rare bird.

I don't "need" a side cover for the Ascot at the moment but if it is something you want to get rid of I'll take it   ;)

And on a side note:  Where have you been hiding TT_four???

Jessie, next time I'm in the garage I'll snap a pic of that side cover. If you can use it, it's yours for the price of shipping.

The CB125 and the "postie" bike don't have titles. So they are off road bikes only. I would love to have a street legal CB125 though.......

There's a good deal on craigslist right now. I'd still love to get one someday too, but I'm trying to stop spending money all the time, which isn't fun thing to do.
http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/mcy/2756747586.html

I've been around, just haven't spent too much time on motorcycle forums. My yz has been out of commission since August or September and I got tired of hanging out on motorcycle forums when I couldn't actually go out and ride haha. Now that my bike is hopefully within days of running again I'll probably be ok to spend some time on here again.

Well glad to see you back TT, how's the wife doing?

That is a nice deal on that CB and I could spare the cash at the moment, you want to deliver it to Bedford, PA for me??   ;)

I'd be extra nice and just toss it in the truck with the yz426sm when I come visit my sister in DC sometime, but unfortunately if I go pick it up and it makes it into my basement, I'm not gonna be willing to let it go haha.

Know the feeling. I'd love to take photos of the F1-11 wings I've taken off and put on (no I ain't no blackhand). But it's all hush hush. But I do remember one female blackhander bending over in front of me for a few hours trying to get a sheer ball in place. Ahhh...

But I digress. My US Wintertime Project is House Reno. It's not motorcycle related, unless you consider my bikes will be there  ;)

My project from last winter. A 1970 Honda CL175. Here are the "after" photos left over from when I sold it in the summertime. It was the scariest motorcycle I ever rode! The bugger could go 70mph on tires no wider than a moped's. I thought a GS was really fickable...until I rode a CL175!

Those are great bikes Brian (I had a 68). With some Dyna coils, Mikuni VM20's, clip ons, Motobits rear sets, and Pirelli or Avon rubbers, it would go faster than 70 and not be AS scary!

Oh you're right! "Rudy" was a blast. She popped and fizzed and vibrated at weird moments. There was always a feeling of "caged madness" about it. I miss her on balmy Friday evenings when there's no wind. I miss the way she gave me a feeling of youthful exuberance, similar to riding a mountain bike for the first time when I was 10.

Nice shadow  :thumb:

Reminds me of what was Almost my first bike.
which was an 87 Honda magna 750.
sucker was in pristine condition almost, but had clutch problems.

was going to still get it but the owner had problems finding the title and was like, yeah I'll order a new one and it will be here in 3 days... Mmmmhmmmm......

then I jumped on my GS days later.

One of the guys at work has a Magna he's owned since the 80's that he never rides.  Those V4's have a really unique sound!  He told me recently he's thinking about selling it.  I really don't need another bike but...

My $100 Shadow burbled to life today!

Awesome job! Extremely satisfying to hear a bike come to life.

After my engine rebuild, I'm happy to say that all seems well with the yz426. I thought the clutch might've been slipping when I took it out for it's first ride, but I think it was just because it was 35 degrees, and between the cold roads, my cold tires, and the water/salt laying on the roads, my back tire would just start spinning so easily that I couldn't even tell. It felt perfectly fine the next day when it was almost 60 degrees, and it seemed to work fine.

On the down side, I found a nail with my rear tire the 2nd time I had it out. I put the original MX wheels on it for now, which might be a good idea considering it's January anyway, and luckily my wheels should have tubes in them, so I think I can get away with sticking a new tube in it and going on with life.

and just for anyone who's tempted to try snow street tires, it doesn't work, haha. I was happy I even managed to get out of that snow after I had stopped moving

I don't have any real place to build a bike, so I do it digitally on my computer.
I started using Blender about a month ago. This is what i have done so far.

Another winter project (though this one is a GS).  It's a 1980 GS550L.  There was a car blocking Adfalchius' garage so I couldn't stow it away as planned.  Then it started to snow.  My buddy Piglet was moving a project of his over to a warehouse space we share so I hauled it up there.  It started to rain/snow on the way.  He was pissed that his toy got wet, I don't think it will hurt mine

-Jessie

The seller had all kinds of critters at his house (dogs, chickens, goats...).  I set up a ramp to load the bike in the truck and one of the goats enjoyed climbing it.

All loaded up and no where to go.  Then the rain/snow showed up.

Ended up stowing it away at a warehouse space I rent with a fellow motorcycle hoarding friend.

My buddy happened to be moving a project of his to the warehouse today too.  He was pissed that his toy got wet

Fancy shmancy wheels

I don't know Harley type engines so I have no idea what this is.  It is shiny though...

The drive line is on the right hand side.  I thought the combination rotor/sprocket (sprotor) was pretty trick.

That is pretty cool. How was it getting that chopper into and out of a truck?? haha it looks like it's about 2 feet longer than my truck bed. I feel like you'd almost have to load it in backwards because all of the weight is on the back end, and I wouldn't feel as comfortable with that weight on my tailgate every time I bit a bump in the road.

Dreaded goats.  Hopefully it's not contagious.  I made sure to wash my hands before I touched my GS.
